EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dominion Energy is working with Richmond Technical Center to offer paid apprenticeship programs that let students learn skills like electrician work — the company said these programs help build a skilled workforce without needing a college degree. Experienced linemen are demonstrating field tasks to prepare students for a challenging and lucrative career.  6 News
  • Virginia Commonwealth University plans to build a $9 million catering kitchen and event space in a dorm at Cary and Belvidere to replace a vacant spot that once housed Chili’s Grill & Bar, Starbucks and AVO Kitchen. The university said the new facility will boost campus dining options — a change that may enhance student services.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Virginia legislators are directing the Department of General Services to study moving the state's fleet management facility from its 40-year home on West Leigh Street amid development changes near Scott’s Addition and the Diamond District— the study will report its findings by November 1.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • On March 18, the Richmond Health Equity Fund granted about $61,000 to the community-run fitness group WeOffTheCouch to expand its school and community partnerships for long-distance running training and mental health support—an initiative aimed at breaking down barriers to local health access. Founded by Anthony Clary in 2019 and now serving over 1,500 people, the group is set to extend its programs as funding applications remain open until March 30.  VPM
