EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Virginia’s 23 community colleges ended diversity, equity and inclusion practices on March 20 with a state board resolution that now requires all programs to meet federal non-discrimination rules — officials said this change protects federal funding. The board also revised its strategic plan and renamed its advisory council to reflect a shift toward merit-based opportunities. Virginia Mercury
- ➤ VCU School of Medicine’s M.D. Class of 2025 held a Hollywood-themed Match Day celebration on March 21 at the National Theater, where 99% of students matched into residency programs and 32 chose to remain at VCU. The dean greeted the crowd with a humorous Spanish accent while couples matched into their chosen specialties to stay in Richmond. Virginia Commonwealth University

- ➤ Richmond residents are invited to join the Go with the Flow project to report flooding issues via an online survey until Sept 1. Southside ReLeaf and researchers from the University of Richmond will use the data to build a model that pinpoints flooding hotspots—guiding future improvements. VPM

- ➤ Henrico Police celebrated the opening of their new South Station on Airport Drive in Varina, replacing the Fair Oaks Station used for 20 years. The 20,000-square-foot facility houses about 160 officers plus units for patrol, traffic safety, SWAT and canine teams and has upgraded spaces for training and dispatch. 12 On Your Side
- ➤ City leaders and community members, including Mayor Danny Avula and Denise Rimes, toured Rudd's Mobile Home Park on the Southside and saw homes with falling floors, broken ceilings and no heat. At Tuesday night's meeting, 2,000 RISC members pressed the mayor to invest 6 million dollars over the next three years for repairs and gun violence reduction programs, and he will present his budget plan on Thursday. 6 News
- ➤ Governor Glenn Youngkin vetoed 158 bills passed in the 2025 General Assembly session — including proposals to raise the minimum wage and add a waiting period for gun purchases. Lawmakers will review the vetoes when they return on April 2. 6 News
- ➤ The City of Richmond is correcting an error on property tax rebate checks that mistakenly printed incorrect names on thousands of mailed checks—officials from the Department of Finance are canceling those checks and reissuing them with the correct information. City officials also confirmed that there is no risk of identity theft and that affected property owners are being notified. 12 On Your Side
