COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AARP Virginia will host three free webinars in April to help residents protect their personal information online—one webinar on protecting personal information will occur Wednesday afternoon, another on managing privacy is scheduled for April 16, and a third featuring the Virginia Office of Attorney General will take place on April 22. In 2023 scammers stole $158.3 billion from Americans, and these sessions will show people how to stay safe online.  6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Perly’s Restaurant & Delicatessen building got a new owner when Ramy Abraham bought it last month for $815,000 from Scott Coleman. Coleman had bought the building in 2014 for $350,000 and revived the restaurant after it closed in 2013.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A video (shared with local media) shows two people on Keswick Avenue approaching a car when one crouched down and stabbed its front wheel (caught on camera), and police are investigating the incident.  12 On Your Side
  • A man was found dead near Richmond’s wastewater treatment plant on Sunday, April 6 when officers responded to a report at the 1400 block of Brander Street and pronounced him dead—Mayor Crimes detectives reported no signs of foul play and are investigating the death.  WRVA
  • Richmond police responded to a call at the 1400 block of Brander Street on April 6 at 2:22 p.m. where they found an adult male pronounced dead—Major Crimes detectives reported no indication of foul play and the Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death.  FOX Richmond

CULTURE NEWS

  • Independent music stores in Richmond will celebrate the 17th Record Store Day on April 12 with in-store performances and special releases including a Taylor Swift 7-inch single, a Grateful Dead box set, and jazz reissues. Jim Bland of Plan 9 Music said artists are set to release singles timed for the day — prompting DJs to spin a mix of new and classic sounds.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Commonwealth University's Equity and Access Services leads efforts to enforce federal civil rights rules amid policy changes—Cleopatra Magwaro said the office works with campus groups to support Title VI, Title IX and other mandates. The office also helps students, staff and visitors report discrimination and get resources.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • VCU is offering a Medicine, Arts and Humanities elective that lets first-year medical students study how art can inform patient care. In January, a dozen students visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to share their thoughts on art and will next explore movement arts at the VCU Health Hub.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • DPU Director Scott Morris briefed the city council on Monday on updated findings from an HNTB after-action report that showed a January 6 power outage caused equipment failure and flooding at the water treatment plant. He said the department will spend $5 million on quick replacements—staffing and training changes are being considered—and further findings will be shared after May 9.  6 News
  • The Virginia Department of Corrections instituted a hiring freeze—aiming to cut unnecessary spending on rising inmate health care costs, according to an internal memo.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
