CRIME NEWS

  • Police said an alleged assault in Henrico led to a high-speed chase to Richmond—officers got a call about a woman whose throat was cut—and the suspect’s car crashed on Route 360 in the southside where he was taken into custody while the victim was taken to a hospital and is fighting for her life.  FOX Richmond

CULTURE NEWS

  • Historic Garden Week is underway in Richmond — fifteen historic homes will be featured to support Virginia’s public gardens. The tours will be held on Tuesday, April 29th in Lower Tuckahoe, Wednesday, April 30th on Pope Avenue, and Thursday, May 1st in Chatham Hills.  12 On Your Side

  • The Virginia Department of Education released four overdue reports showing school funding, school performance, and teacher pay two months after a lawmaker deadline while a fifth report on teacher conditions is still pending—after Superintendent Lisa Coons quit. New superintendent Emily Anne Gullickson has been named and her plans will be reviewed by the General Assembly.  Virginia Mercury
  • Ellie Sabalewski got a head start in engineering by joining a summer research program near her high school and working in VCU’s musculoskeletal lab. After she graduates in May, she will begin her Ph.D. in bioengineering at Rice University this fall.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • VCU students and community members walked out in protest on Monday after the university confirmed that the visas for two international students and one recent graduate were revoked—protest organizers demanded more legal or financial support for affected students as VCU joins other Virginia universities facing the broader visa crackdown.  12 On Your Side

  • Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians on Hermitage Road and Laburnum Avenue must slow down today as the city launches its Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper project using flex posts — a temporary fix to improve safety. City officials say the project follows a study that showed fewer crashes after the removal of a Confederate statue and includes a new street art mural designed by local students to remind drivers to slow down.  6 News
  • Dozens of residents filled the Richmond City Council Chambers Monday night to speak about Mayor Danny Avula's $3 Billion budget proposal that funds accessible housing investments with $49.2 Million but cuts support for mobile home repairs. Grassroots groups and advocates for Councilwoman Kenya Gibson's one million dollar amendment said they were troubled by affordable housing challenges—council members will review the budget and amendments in a meeting Wednesday morning.  12 On Your Side
  • VCU Police are boosting traffic enforcement along a five-block area on Belvidere Street from West Broad Street to Canal Street to help keep drivers and pedestrians safe. They issued 105 citations from January 1 to March 31 and reported 20 pedestrian crashes, plus officers will continue patrols through May to curb dangerous habits.  6 News
  • Virginia’s prison system faces a six-year lawsuit by 11 prisoners who claim the (Step-Down) program has locked them in near-solitary conditions for far too long. A federal judge will hear an emergency motion this Thursday after several inmates burned themselves to force transfers.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
