- ➤ A teen pleaded guilty to malicious wounding after he shot a Richmond police officer during a traffic stop in September; he will remain in jail until he turns 21 and then serve 10 years of probation while the officer has fully recovered. 12 On Your Side
- ➤ A funeral service at Oakwood Cemetery turned deadly Wednesday when an argument among mourners escalated into gunfire near Nine Mile Road, killing one man who was the uncle of the person being buried—police said no arrests have been made. 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Richmond’s first Moon Tree was dedicated at Thomas C. Boushall Middle School through a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service, NASA, and the school—its seeds orbited Earth and the moon during NASA’s Artemis I Mission to honor Apollo 14. The event featured interactive stations from local partners and eighth graders joined a service project by South Side ReLeaf. Richmond Free Press

- ➤ State Health Commissioner Karen Shelton said years of neglect at Richmond’s main water treatment plant—including failing backup batteries and a faulty culture—led to a crisis that left residents and hospitals without water following January’s power outage. The Virginia Department of Health will send a notice of alleged violation to the city soon, and the city must respond within 45 days as it prepares nearly $64 million in plant upgrades. VPM
- ➤ Mayor Avula announced today that the city will form an Office of Gun Violence Prevention to build stronger community ties and lower gun violence—he said the one-person office will have its position filled next month and may expand later. The new office will work with law enforcement and nonprofit partners to address recent spikes in violence. 12 On Your Side
