CRIME NEWS

  • Carmen Wilkins pleads for help in solving her son Caron Wilkins' unsolved murder after he was shot near the 200 block of Knightsmanor Court on April 20, 2021 just before 5 p.m.—she says she is having nightmares and struggles with sleepless nights.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hanover County Public Schools is honoring the eight Black students who first attended its all-white schools in 1963 by unveiling plaques that mark their courage and legacy—Walter Lee and his classmates, including the Thompson sisters, helped open the door to equal education. The Thompson sisters were honored on April 14 and six Lee-Davis students will be celebrated at 5 p.m. on Monday.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Library of Virginia lost $4.3 million in federal funding — cutting services and staff, and local libraries may have to reduce programs and online access. Officials said libraries in areas like Botetourt County will face tough choices — including scaling back digital resources after Oct. 1.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Henrico County announced a new plan to develop the southern section of Tuckahoe Creek Park by adding a 1 1/2-mile boardwalk, kayak launch, and fishing pier using 21 acres donated by local groups. The $10 million project will take 12 to 18 months to build and is set to open between 2027 and 2028.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Campaign finance filings show that defense attorney Tom Barbour raised about $126,000 over the past calendar year while incumbent Commonwealth's Attorney Colette McEachin raised $82,000—almost all received in the last three months and none in 2024. Barbour said his early fundraising signals strong momentum as the campaign races ahead, and McEachin said she remains confident in her record.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • A state watchdog report said Virginia social workers sometimes remove children from homes without proper planning, which can delay finding safe placements. The report also blamed understaffed + overworked local social services for these challenges.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Health reported the state’s first measles case of 2025 in a child under 4 from the Northwest region who traveled internationally. Health officials identified exposure sites at Kaiser Permanente Caton Hill in Woodbridge on April 15+ at Kaiser Permanente Fredericksburg on April 16+ and urged anyone unvaccinated to contact their provider if symptoms develop.  12 On Your Side
  • Virginia health officials released potential exposure sites after a child who traveled internationally was diagnosed with measles. The sites in Woodbridge on April 15 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and in Fredericksburg on April 16 from noon to 5 p.m.—health experts urged anyone who might have been exposed to check their vaccination records and contact their healthcare provider.  6 News
