  • Venture Richmond is hosting a pop-up meeting today from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. near Potterfield Bridge to gather feedback on design plans for Brown’s Island, which include flexible seating under Manchester Bridge and improved access to the Canal Walk—upgrades that will cause a temporary closure after the marathon.  FOX Richmond
  • Tablespoons Bakery, a nonprofit that taught young adults with developmental disabilities essential job and life skills, announced Monday it will close by May 10 due to rising rent, increased competition, reduced funding, and higher supply costs—its founder Elizabeth Redford also cited her ongoing health challenges after a decade of leadership.  6 News

  • Bishop Barry Knestout recalled his meeting with Pope Francis during a trip to Rome last October and noted the pope's kind words as he died at 7:35 a.m. Monday after Easter—VCU professor Andrew Chesnut described him as a humble reformer who changed church life, and the Catholic community now begins a nine-day mourning period.  6 News

  • VCU is hosting its 28th Graduate Student Research Symposium on April 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and its 17th Poster Symposium for Undergraduate Research on April 24 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Commonwealth Ballrooms in the Commons—nearly 400 students will present work on topics like urban heat and battery improvements.  Virginia Commonwealth University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Richmond has launched its Cool the City campaign to plant trees and train workers to care for greenspaces—an effort supported by local groups and a $6 million USDA grant—and the event kicks off today from 4–6 p.m. at Broad Rock Sports Complex.  VPM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond City Council discussed proposed changes to Mayor Danny Avula’s fiscal 2026 spending plan and reviewed resident budget amendments on Monday, and committees will meet today to assess emergency services data and labor agreements. County boards in Chesterfield, Hanover, and Albemarle, along with Charlottesville City Council, will hold public hearings on projects including a new school campus, real estate tax rates, and the Ashcake Road landfill expansion — marking a busy week for local government.  VPM
  • VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation released their draft six-year program with about $7 billion in funds for transit and capital projects, and public comment begins today in Richmond. Officials worry that federal cutbacks — such as reduced discretionary grants — may slow future investments for projects like GO Alex and bus replacements in Hampton Roads.  Virginia Mercury
