  • Déja Coley, founder of local nonprofit Girls Like Me, opens Rinse Retreat today at 8123 Staples Mill Road in Henrico— a shop that offers shampoo, detangle and blow dry services for women with afro-textured hair— after being inspired by a Facebook post.  6 News
  • The U.S. Small Business Administration opened two recovery centers — one at Richmond Public Library and the other at North Park Library in Henrico — starting Tuesday, April 22, to help local shops and restaurants recover from January’s week-long water outage. Business owners can visit as walk-ins or set appointments for disaster loan assistance.  FOX Richmond

CRIME NEWS

  • A former corrections officer from Pocahontas State Correctional Center, Raekwon Robins, was arrested on April 11 and now faces charges for possessing drugs valued over $150k — police also seized a handgun and $1,000 in cash from his residence.  12 On Your Side
  • Police responded to two shootings in Richmond at 1:22 a.m. on the 3800 block of Guilder Lane and at 1:24 a.m. on 300 5th Street, where a man and a woman were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries + both cases are under investigation.  12 On Your Side

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU physics majors and Professor Patrick Woodworth led a hands-on science session at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, where they used a Van de Graaff generator to show seventh-graders how static electricity works and electromagnets to explain magnetic fields. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NOAA laid off 650 workers back in February so farmers are worried because they rely on its weather forecasts for growing crops and caring for animals—weather balloon launches were reduced from twice to once a day. The agency's cuts may limit vital data that Virginia farmers need as they plan for upcoming storms.  Virginia Mercury
  • The Virginia War Memorial will honor nearly 12,000 fallen veterans by reading their names aloud during the Say Their Names Marathon on Memorial Day. The event will start around 12:45 p.m. and run until 12:30 a.m. on May 27 at (621 South Belvidere Street).  6 News
  • City Manager Avula proposed a 3.25% raise for all city workers while Councilwoman Abubaker pushed an amendment to cut the raises for non-union employees earning over $150K amid proposed spending cuts—officials argue the increases help retain talent in tough economic times. Council members will deliberate on the budget changes until May 15 to address fiscal priorities and public concerns.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
