CRIME NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU biology major Tamara Eddy—who joined a field program on the James—found a passion for bats while collecting data and building bat houses in Bellemeade Park, and she plans to pursue this work in graduate school after learning bat handling in Belize. Her studies and hands-on projects grew from in-person classes during a challenging time in her academic career.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Richmond Public Schools partnered with the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU to launch a telehealth program that gives students a virtual visit with medical experts so they can stay in class. The program has completed 10 visits at Cardinal, Carver, and Fairfield Court Elementary Schools since its official launch on Monday—an effort that quietly began in March—and will expand if its early success continues.  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GRTC announced a new advertising program that sells ad space on buses and at stops so riders can continue free transit until at least fiscal year 2026 — the change comes as state funds are wound down. The zero-fare program, active since 2020, helped save money for commuters and will rely on ad revenue in the coming months.  6 News
  • Rep. Rob Wittman (R-1st) said he will not support proposals that would reduce the federal match rate or impose a per-capita cap on Medicaid spending. He argued that such cuts would trigger Virginia's law reversing expansion for more than 641,000 residents.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Richmond libraries froze hiring and cut part-time hours amid a budget crunch after City Council approved Mayor Danny Avula’s request for a 3.25% salary increase for City Hall employees — including top earners — two days earlier.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Richmond region is named an Asthma Capital based on high asthma rates, emergency room visits and fatalities, and it ranks high for seasonal allergies. This May the Richmond Henrico Health District urges families to create an Asthma Action Plan to help manage symptoms and avoid triggers — a crucial guide for children at school and daycare.  6 News
  • VCU researchers developed Nerve Tape, a bandage that uses tiny hooks—helping nerves reconnect 4.8 times faster than regular sutures with 97% success in early tests—while the device was cleared by the FDA in 2022.
