BUSINESS NEWS

  • The LEGO Group announced it is investing $366 million to build a warehouse and distribution center covering 2 million square feet at Crosspointe Business Centre in Prince George County + the project is expected to create over 300 jobs. It will operate alongside LEGO's planned manufacturing facility in Chesterfield + Gov. Glenn Youngkin said the move deepens the company’s presence in Virginia.  12 On Your Side

CULTURE NEWS

  • Mariela Gavino turned her 2022 pop-up bookstore into a permanent shop in late 2024 by opening ILYSM Books in the former Scrap RVA space on Brookland Park Boulevard in North Side; she chose the name to remind people to say I love you so much and now offers a curated collection of new and used books—showing her deep passion for literature.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU College of Engineering hosted its Capstone Design Expo on April 25, where more than 90 student projects showed real-world solutions. Award-winning teams built a prosthetic glove for a veteran golfer, a new dynamometer for naval tests, and a device to improve potato chip production — ideas that took months of teamwork — with support from faculty and project partners.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Richmond native Everette Taylor, CEO of Kickstarter, will deliver the keynote at VCU’s spring commencement on May 10 at 10 a.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center — he grew up in the South Side and plans to inspire graduates with a message of resilience.  Richmond Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power have filed proposals to change net metering rules for rooftop solar, with the new plans set to lower credits for excess electricity+ critics say the changes may discourage solar investments. The State Corporation Commission will review APCo’s proposal on May 20 while Dominion’s proposal remains pending.  Virginia Mercury

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond voters will choose their next sheriff on June 17 when incumbent Sheriff Antionette Irving faces former police sergeant William Burnett in a primary election. Burnett, who lost to Irving by 11 points in 2021, says her handling of jail issues and staff shortages needs change—claims that have stirred a strong debate.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Bella Francesca fought leukemia and died of an infection at age 11. The Francesca family now honors her memory by hosting A Gift for Bella Day tomorrow at Milestone Field and Clubhouse in Mechanicsville—raising funds for 2-year-old Waylon battling brain cancer—to continue Bella’s legacy of kindness.  6 News
  • Jerry John Rawlings Mensah, a master's student at VCU, uses AI and machine learning to turn health data into clear stories for the community.
