CRIME NEWS

  • A Richmond high school student was killed in a shooting, and Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras called the incident a heartbreaking tragedy — details of the investigation have not been released yet.  12 On Your Side
  • A man died after a shooting early Sunday, May 11 near the James River when officers responded to reports of gunfire on the 600 block of South 2nd Street—police later found a damaged vehicle and took the victim to a local hospital where he died.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond is ready for a busy summer of music with festivals, outdoor concerts, and new shows like the Allianz Amphitheater debuts in June and After Hours Concerts returning in Glen Allen. Local pop band Drook, the 2025 Newlin Music Prize winner, said their evolving sound shows our community's creative spirit & many national and local artists will perform at spots such as Brown’s Island and The National.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Monday, Richmond-area childcare providers participated in A Day Without Childcare to show how high infant care costs average nearly $18,000 per year and leave over 53,000 children with limited public slot options. Advocates urged Virginia lawmakers to invest more in early education—warning that low wages and staffing challenges are hurting families and the local economy.  6 News
  • Khalil Watson, a Reynolds Community College student paralyzed in a 2016 shooting, received his diploma Monday at the Siegel Center using a wearable robotic exoskeleton—he made careful steps with support from his therapists and family amid applause. He will transfer to Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall and join local sports programs to continue pursuing athletics.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Fishery managers met today to protect Atlantic striped bass—Maryland proposed moving its no-target fishing closure to August while Virginia awaits further action from the interstate fishery commission.  Virginia Mercury

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Henrico is proposing a zone that limits data centers to the White Oak Technology Park as Varina Supervisor Tyrone Nelson said he does not want Varina to become a data center capital like Northern Virginia. The Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission will meet Thursday to review rules on setbacks, noise, and construction requirements — future centers outside the focus area will need special board approval.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • VCU Police announced a traffic plan for downtown Richmond as graduation ceremonies begin at the Siegel Center from May 19 to 23 and May 28 to 30; the strategy has no-parking signs on West Marshall (with towing starting May 19) and designated areas for buses and drivers. Local agencies and the city are coordinating to set up short-term parking zones and safety measures for pedestrians.  12 On Your Side
