COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 150 exhibitors and 35 musicians will join the Fan Arts Stroll on May 15 and May 16 from 4 to 8 p.m.—a free nonprofit event hosted by the Fan District Association that invites local art and music fans to explore unique exhibits and performances.  RVAHub
  • The Allianz Amphitheater is nearing its opening as it will host Kansas and 38 Special on Friday, June 6 for its first concert—Live Nation’s general manager, Rebecca Street, said the venue will use decibel monitors and suggest off-site parking to address Oregon Hill residents’ concerns.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fashion designer Franchesca Claros-Chavez held her first Latinx fashion show at the Commons this month, showcasing streetwear inspired by her Bolivian and Brazilian roots while building on her business Luamodaclaros, started in February. The VCU senior plans to launch a new streetwear collection later this year as she works toward her dream of creating her own fashion line by learning from her grandmother.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • A new event will bring readers and writers together this weekend & promise a day of book fun, featuring 25 authors holding signings, discussions, and panel talks at the Wellsmith Apartments event space in Libbie Mill. Organizer Wanda Miller of FoxHouse Publishing said the event will kick off a summer reading list and boost independent publishing.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chesterfield County school leaders will vote on adding nearly 150 weapon scanners costing over $2.7 million for middle and high schools. If approved, the scanners will be installed in 28 buildings beginning in August—continuing a pilot program tested last year.  FOX Richmond

FINANCE NEWS

  • Richmond residents with older cars are facing huge tax bill increases; one owner saw his 2004 BMW convertible jump from an assessed value of $2,350 to nearly $44,000. Several others have had trouble reaching the finance department for help — many blame a new system for the errors in vehicle assessments.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
