COMMUNITY NEWS

  • James 'Jimmy' Boehling, a WWII veteran and lone survivor of a B-17 mission over Germany, celebrated his 100th birthday Friday at his Henrico County retirement community with family and a private Mass led by Bishop Barry Knestout. He flew one mission that ended in a deadly crash from which he bailed out—his survival is remembered nearly 80 years later.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Volunteers read nearly 12,000 names (from World War II and the Global War on Terror) at the Virginia War Memorial starting just before 1 p.m. on Memorial Day until about 12:30 a.m. to honor fallen service members.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • A search found 742 bodies under a Confederate marker in Richmond. Officials said the layout of the graves and historical records suggest the site was used as a military burial ground but they cannot identify who is buried there.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • The Science Museum of Virginia is hosting the Ultimate Dinosaurs exhibit that features life-sized models of Southern Hemisphere dinosaurs, hands-on fossil activities, and an augmented reality experience. The exhibit runs from May 31 to Sept. 1 and tickets cost $5 (museum admission ranges from $10 to $17.50).  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richmond Public Schools will hire 55 multilingual teachers to meet state-mandated lower student-teacher ratios for English language learners and avoid the risk of losing state funding— the district currently employs 86 multilingual educators and plans summer training to support about 4,300 learners. Hiring is part of the fiscal year 2026 budget and the district has already interviewed nearly 65 candidates.  VPM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond City Council is voting today on an ordinance that will add a 5-cent tax on disposable plastic bags at supermarkets, convenience stores, and drug stores—revenue will pay for cleanup projects, school programs, and ways to fight pollution.  6 News
  • A new stoplight will be installed at Pepper and Patterson Avenues this week to help pedestrians cross safely and slow speeding vehicles on one of Richmond’s busiest corridors. Council member Andrew Breton said the move may reduce cut-through traffic and could be followed by speed bumps—steps aimed at addressing community safety concerns.  6 News
  • Richmond has opened applications for the Richmond Resilience Initiative, which gives eligible single parents and primary caregivers $500 a month for 24 months with no strings attached. Applications will be accepted until June 30 as residents can use the funds for bills, debt, or education.  6 News
