EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ State officials removed the requirement for graduate-level courses for early childhood special education endorsements on May 22 to help fill about 70 vacant positions amid a 24% rise in preschoolers identified with disabilities. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Richmond opened applications for the fourth cohort of the Resilience Initiative, a basic income program that gives eligible single parents $500 per month for two years—applications must be submitted by June 30th. - ➤ City officials confirmed that a draft survey using ground-penetrating radar detected 472 probable and 270 possible graves beneath a Confederate marker and a Department of Public Utilities substation on Wise Street—work that follows costly renovations made in 2023 after a local resident's request. The marker, erected in 1939 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy to honor 100 soldiers, is part of research that shows the site was used for burials as early as the Civil War, and a full report is expected in the coming days. - ➤ Richmond attorney Tom Barbour appeared on the WTVR Podcast Untold as he announced his candidacy for Commonwealth’s Attorney and said he will work to reduce rising violent crime in our city—after losing to incumbent Colette McEachin in 2021. He noted a surge in shootings and murders this first quarter and pointed to his Marine Corps service and law reform experience as proof he is ready for change. 6 News
