CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old driver named Naseem Kariem King was fatally shot early Sunday morning on Interstate 64 near the ramp for Interstate 95 in Richmond—police said his vehicle stopped on the shoulder with two other passengers unharmed and traffic being diverted during the investigation.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Since launching RichMahj in January 2024, software solutions consultant Sara Sloman has hosted private mahjong lessons with light snacks in Richmond—she is now expanding her teacher network to Williamsburg, Virginia Beach and Morehead City to reach more players.  Richmond Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Richmond City Council will vote on a 5-cent bag tax and review proposals on contractor wages, flood mapping, tennis courts, and state funding while the School Board updates its FY26 budget and discusses changes to department agreements. Upcoming meetings in Chesterfield and Charlottesville will address operating budgets, capital projects, and utility rate changes—each affecting local services and infrastructure.  VPM
  • Rep. Jennifer McClellan said today that the GOP tax and spending bill will bring new Medicaid rules—like work requirements and copays—that could leave many Virginians without insurance and strain the state budget.  VPM
  • DHS removed its controversial sanctuary jurisdictions list from its website after local officials in Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover said they were wrongly included. Visitors now see an error message and local leaders are waiting for federal clarification—officials have not received a response.  6 News
  • The DMV has permission in the revised state budget to spend $16 million from fees to fix up its headquarters on West Broad Street—its first renovation since 1979. The agency will consolidate operations and rent unused space to other state agencies—while still checking all options, including a possible move.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • States are offering large tax breaks and relaxed power rules to attract data centers that support artificial intelligence & cloud computing while lawmakers and communities question the costs. In Virginia, Gov. Youngkin vetoed a bill that would have required developers to disclose information on noise and water usage.  6 News
