COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens of families and local leaders gathered at Main Line Brewery on Sunday afternoon to stand up against gun violence, honoring those lost to gun incidents. Moms Demand Action hosted the event with speakers including Police Chief Rick Edwards — Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan and grieving mother Laverne McMullen stressed the need for safe gun storage.  12 On Your Side

CRIME NEWS

  • Gunfire scattered about 100 teens at Harry G. Daniel Park on Sunday night, damaging vehicles and sparking a police investigation + neighbors said they felt disappointed by the chaos, though no injuries were reported.  6 News
  • A prayer vigil was held at a Richmond apartment complex to honor 22-year-old Alicia Ellis, who was fatally shot by her father last weekend, as police charged 55-year-old Alonzo Ellis with shooting in an occupied dwelling—further charges are pending.  6 News

  • Today, Ashland Theater hosts a free movie summer series sponsored by Rappahannock Electric Cooperative with screenings at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. that will run until August 11th and include films (Sing 2, Shrek, and The Land Before Time).  12 On Your Side
  • The Richmond Times-Dispatch has shared archival photos from Saint Gertrude High School that show key moments from 1913 to 1997—displaying changes in school life and traditions.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Central Virginia will mark Juneteenth, honoring the end of slavery in 1865, with a series of events scheduled from June 14 to June 21 including a celebration at Manchester Dock on June 14, a free exhibit at The Branch on June 19, and family-friendly festivities at Randolph-Macon College and Hopewell City Park on June 21 — all featuring live music, food vendors and community activities.   • A Richmond nonprofit named Culture Encounters, which started as Next Star Arts Program, now hosts cultural events to help people learn about different backgrounds & break down biases.   • Several public meetings are scheduled this week; Richmond City Council meets today to update on the Code Refresh plan and vote on a key administrative appointment—set in the council chambers at 301 N. 9th St. Henrico and Hanover supervisors will meet at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Henrico Sports and Events Center to discuss a joint water systems update following another crisis—other local bodies will consider school board pay and zoning changes.  VPM
