ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Richmond International Airport resumed international service last week with BermudAir flights to Bermuda operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The new service ended a decade long gap in direct overseas connections — Embraer jets provide two hour flights for leisure travelers. Richmond Free Press

- ➤ Barbara Grey, a revered Richmond educator—teacher, principal and art curator—died peacefully on June 8 at age 99. She spent her long career inspiring students and led several public schools while earning honors for her innovative work in education. Richmond Free Press
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A study found that Virginia neighborhoods affected by redlining are up to 15 degrees hotter than other areas—due to low tree cover and extensive concrete surfaces that leave people more exposed to extreme heat. Richmond officials are planning to add more green spaces to help cool these vulnerable areas. Richmond Free Press
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Department of Public Works is starting a curb extension project on Cary and Main streets in The Fan and VCU beginning Monday, June 16th to improve pedestrian safety. The project will affect nearly 30 intersections—causing intermittent lane closures—until April when weather permits. 12 On Your Side
- ➤ Richmond City Hall named Odie Donald II as the new Chief Administrative Officer after a council vote on Monday; he will start duties Wednesday, July 9, succeeding interim leaders. The city also selected David Levine as General Registrar, who begins Tuesday, July 1, and announced Gregory Hopkins as the director of the new Office of Gun Violence Prevention. Richmond Free Press
- ➤ Incumbent Sheriff Antionette Irving and challenger William Burnett are competing for the Richmond sheriff job with different plans for jail programs and community outreach—Irving backs more rehabilitative programs while Burnett promises tougher measures to stop drug smuggling by staff. They last squared off in 2021, and voters will choose a leader on June 17. VPM
- ➤ A new city report found that Richmond’s water crisis response in January suffered from poor coordination—multiple teams ordered the same resources and some staff did not get the needed alerts. Mayor Danny Avula said his team will use the report’s recommendations to improve emergency plans for future crises. 6 News
- ➤ Richmond’s Department of Public Works plans to replace the over-75-year-old Arthur Ashe Boulevard bridge with a $38 million project that will add separated paths for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. City officials said the design (using local and federal funding) will improve access between Scott’s Addition and the Diamond District, with construction to begin in Fall 2026 and replacement to be completed in Fall 2028 (enhancing safety). - ➤ Hanover and Henrico supervisors met at Henrico Sports and Events Center in Glen Allen on June 11 to discuss reducing reliance on Richmond’s water system after the city released a report on January’s water crisis — the meeting focused on plans for long-term water distribution upgrades, improved communication, and new utility options.
