Good morning, Richmond. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 17th of June.

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Average gas prices in Richmond rose more than 20 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.08 at 567 stations as rising oil costs linked to Middle East tensions pushed up costs. Patrick De Haan of GasBuddy said gas and diesel prices will likely increase by 10 to 20 cents and 15 to 25 cents in the coming days — a development that could lead to higher fuel costs.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU students in environmental studies courses took spring break trips to southern landscapes to study rivers, birds, and outdoor skills. Effective July 1, the new School of Life Sciences and Sustainability will join biology and environmental studies to train future river stewards—adding real-world learning to classroom study.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • VCU honors student Alexandria Davis, 26, who was in foster care, now helps other foster youth through the Great Expectations program—she runs a pastry business and leads workshops on college resources while studying at VCU. Davis is also working on research to drive policy change and plans to pursue an MBA.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • St. Margaret’s School in Tappahannock is at risk of closing this fall because enrollment has dropped and the operating deficit has grown. A parent filed a lawsuit against the school’s owner—Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia—to stop actions that may affect fundraising and enrollment, and a final decision on the school’s future will be made by July 15.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Virginia school officials are still waiting for a federal decision on appeals to use more than $33 million in pandemic relief funds after a March 28 deadline was set, and 14 school divisions plus state programs have submitted requests to cover staffing, tutoring services, and building renovations. The outcome will determine if these funds can support crucial school needs without disrupting planned budgets.  Virginia Mercury

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medical student Alex Erling is researching why her grandfather’s knee replacement led to a severe infection that caused his leg amputation. She secured funding and is reviewing patient records with experts to determine if a longer waiting period before surgery for patients with past cellulitis might lower the risk of joint infection.  Virginia Commonwealth University
