Good morning, Richmond. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 18th of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A two-year-old toddler named Cameron 'Cam' Massie drowned in a backyard pool at a home on the 8300 block of Bowers Lane in Henrico County on June 15th—police said he was found unresponsive at 1:49 p.m. and noted no signs of foul play while detectives continued investigating the incident.  WRVA

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lisa Markow, her husband Christian Markow and partner Mark Brown opened Lost Office Collaborative at Rocketts Landing near the James River and Virginia Capital Trail. The meeting space is designed with biophilic elements—earthy green colors, wood features and draped vines—to provide a calm, creative environment for work.  Richmond Magazine
  • Evizia, a startup from VCU research, got a $2.2M NIH grant to build a new microscope system that will help scientists see DNA molecules directly — it uses high-speed imaging for clearer quality control — and the grant will fund efforts to bring the device into labs for better testing.  Virginia Commonwealth University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Henrico County's water won the national 'Best of the Best Water Taste Test' by the American Water Works Association—judges evaluated 26 samples based on odor, flavor and aftertaste at a conference in Denver on June 11. This honor was awarded after local winners with no recent health violations qualified for the contest.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond officials said Henrico increased water outtake from the Shurm Street connection during May’s water crisis — rising from 2.19 to 6.46 MGD before the boil advisory was issued. State health officials noted that the failure to reduce flows and deferred maintenance at the plant contributed to the pressure drop.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Virginia officials told a General Assembly budget committee that the House-passed One Big Beautiful Bill could raise food stamp costs up to $540 million a year—shifting 25% of benefit expenses to the state. Senate proposals may lower that cost to $270 million, but local lawmakers and social service leaders warned that the added burden could strain programs like SNAP.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Richmond launched a new online progress tracker for its purchasing card program on Monday, June 16 to offer real-time updates after the city reformed the program by reducing misused cards from 320 to about 60 with strict limits — an effort to boost transparency and accountability. City officials say the change follows past misuse and is designed to rebuild public trust in government spending.  WRVA
  • Virginia helped broker a $7.4 billion settlement that permanently bars the Sacklers from Purdue Pharma—ending their opioid marketing—and directs up to $103.8 million to treatment and recovery programs over 15 years. Attorney General Jason Miyares said the settlement now goes to bankruptcy court for final approval.  Virginia Mercury
