COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Richmond will celebrate Maggie Walker’s 161st birthday in July with events on July 12, July 15, and July 19—honoring her legacy as the first African American woman to charter a bank. The city has planned a cemetery clean up, a community history exhibition with a bus tour, and a day of service to mark the milestone.  12 On Your Side
  • VCU’s Virginia Center on Aging got nearly $600,000 in new funding from the federal Administration for Community Living to start a program helping older people who face abuse and neglect. The grant will let local groups offer emergency housing, legal aid, home meals, and rides — services provided in Richmond and nearby counties.  Richmond Magazine

  • A 12 year old boy from Petersburg saved his two younger brothers and his grandmother from a quickly spreading house fire on June 3 and was honored by the city council and named an honorary firefighter—Petersburg fire chief Wayne Hoover said his quick thinking saved his family's lives.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday evening, Nichole Armstead won an uncontested primary—she will continue serving as the city's treasurer.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • State Sen. Ghazala Hashmi won the nomination for lieutenant governor on Tuesday in a close race statewide. Richmond voters gave her a 10,500-vote lead over former Mayor Levar Stoney because they blamed him for a water crisis and his support for a casino — issues that stirred local anger.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • At Virginia Commonwealth University, scientists in a Richmond lab are using a new chimeritope technology—stitching together snippets of proteins from multiple OspC strains—to develop a Lyme disease vaccine and treatments for other tick-borne illnesses. They are working with the National Institutes of Health to start human trials in the coming years as tick populations and their diseases continue to expand globally.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Musicians On Call will host a celebration event on June 26th at 1:30 p.m. at Chippenham Hospital (7101 Jahnke Rd) where Charles Esten will perform to mark the launch of the expanded bedside music program in partnership with HCA Healthcare.  RVAHub
