Good morning, Richmond. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Tuesday in Richmond, 13 year old cancer patient DJ Daniel was named an honorary Virginia state trooper (appointed by Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares) after overcoming brain and spinal cancer and undergoing more than a dozen surgeries, and he thanked his family for their support.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were shot late Monday night near the intersection on Fairgate Road in Midlothian—sources say the incident appears to be from an accidental firearm discharge with non-life-threatening injuries.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Earlier this spring, five VCU School of Business students (Byron, Kevin, Adam, Jaella, and Aryan) partnered with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to design a secure prototype using differential privacy (a method that adds random noise to protect data) so that researchers could safely use behavioral health information. The agency will work with a new student team in the fall to explore generative AI solutions for public health data.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • VCU assistant professor Adrienne Baldwin-White is developing interactive video games that train college students on sexual violence prevention. The first game, Once Upon a Party (which takes about 30 minutes to play and is already used at Notre Dame), uses realistic text messages to show how misconduct can occur while a second game will include diverse campus stories and meet new training requirements.  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City auditors released a report on Tuesday morning that found $5 million in questionable credit card spending by City Hall officials between July 2022 and May 2024 — many transactions lacked proper receipts and exceeded spending limits. Mayor Danny Avula has suspended most cards and started a review to improve controls over public funds.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Both Governor candidates, Abigail Spanberger and Winsome Earle-Sears, have pledged to repeal Virginia's long-standing car tax if elected. Critics warn the repeal will be difficult because local governments depend on the tax for revenue + finding an alternative funding method will require complex policy changes.  Virginia Mercury

HEALTH NEWS

  • After her two-year-old daughter nearly drowned in a friend's pool last summer, Virginia mom Brooke Gilland now teaches survival swim lessons to help prevent future tragedies as three local children drowned in the past two weeks. Survival swim instructor Katie Trotman, who recalls her daughter’s near-drowning in 2020, said water skills give kids a better chance to be safe.  6 News
