ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A three-alarm fire damaged multiple structures and left several local businesses in Shockoe Bottom waterlogged and covered in ash Wednesday evening as over 10 fire trucks responded and local owner Sherwin Pilley (of C&P Baking Co.) said the intense blaze was frightening.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • An 18-year-old Varina High School student was shot and killed while driving on I-64 near its split with I-95 in Henrico County on June 1 after leaving a graduation party in Glen Allen, and his grieving mother is urging anyone with information to help investigators.  6 News

  • The Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU will open Ayida on June 27, a group show inspired by Haitian poet Assotto Saint that celebrates Caribbean culture through works by five early- to midcareer artists – the exhibit is free and will run until early next year.  Virginia Commonwealth University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Commonwealth University nursing students finished their spring semester by creating art that shows mental health challenges using paint, sculpture, and mixed media. The project required them to blend clinical lessons with creativity and empathy—illustrating concepts like anxiety and depression in a visual way.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Northstar Academy and Career Center opened a new nearly 16,000-square-foot gymnasium and community center built with a $12 million fundraising effort that features a hearing loop—first of its kind at a K-12 school in Virginia. The facility supports sports, clubs, and other activities for about 125 students and the center will add a track and field facility this summer.  Richmond Magazine
  • VCU unanimously approved Ellen Fitzsimmons, former chief legal officer at Truist Financial Corp., as rector of the Board of Visitors and her term will begin July 1—Gov. Glenn Youngkin reappointed vice rector Andy Florance and named three new board members.   • A Richmond City audit found over $5 million in questionable spending on p-cards from July 2022 to May 2024. The review led to new restrictions for remaining cards — and the Office of the Inspector General is now examining the transactions.  6 News
