Good morning, Richmond. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 29th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Virginia deputy who lost his legs in a distracted driving crash organized a bowling fundraiser at Bowl America on Hull Street Road to promote highway safety and support first responder families. Chesterfield Police Community Engagement Officer David Dietrich said the event raised funds for highway safety programs — reminding drivers to stay alert ahead of July 4th travel.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • In the 1980s, the 800 and 900 blocks of West Grace Street served as a lively nightlife district near VCU where young people, bikers, and local patrons gathered for drinks while occasional brawls prompted police actions. Shifts such as the closure of notorious bars — including Newgate Prison — and changes in local policing eventually transformed the area’s rowdy character.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A ticket purchased in Virginia matched all six numbers in Friday's Mega Millions drawing, winning a $348 million jackpot— the largest prize in Virginia Lottery history. Officials will reveal later today where the winning ticket was bought.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Charles City County officials delayed a vote on Diode Ventures’ proposal to use 515 acres for a data center—residents oppose the plan while the county faces fiscal strains including a $5 million loan due Monday. Officials said they are reviewing past decisions and tightening internal controls to improve county finances.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • The Virginia Department of Transportation will end many lane closures and suspend highway work zones from noon on July 3 until noon on July 7 to ease heavy traffic as more than 2 million travelers head out for Independence Day on July 4. Some work zones will remain active—so drivers should plan for possible delays on their route.  12 On Your Side
  • GRTC has unveiled four new articulated buses that are twenty feet longer than standard buses and can hold 120 passengers—this change aims to meet rising demand on the Pulse Bus Rapid Transit line on Broad Street. They will begin service on July 8 and were paid for with grants and SmartScale state funding.  12 On Your Side
