  • Anthem LemonAid, a 25-year fundraiser benefiting Children’s Hospital at VCU, will run from July 18–20 and expand into Fredericksburg as families, businesses, and community groups register for free before 8:00 p.m. on July 16—participants will pick up their kits on July 16 and 17 while local restaurants join a Restaurant Challenge to boost funds for pediatric care.  RVAHub
  • Today, James River Park officials warn that rising water levels on the river may risk safety for visitors using water for recreation, so families are advised to wear life jackets and check river level signs before entering the water—carefully choosing spots like Huguenot Flatwater for milder conditions. Officials also recommend that those tubing at Pony Pasture remain alert to changing currents.  6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bloomistry officially launched in Richmond today, offering regenerative gardening consulting + eco-friendly workshops led by Conner Parrish, a Virginia Commonwealth University alum. Parrish, who first started Blossoming Roots Farm & Supply in 2022, plans to open a flagship education center and launch a national line of curated soil products to help local residents grow their own food and improve their soil.  RVAHub

CRIME NEWS

  • On July 2 at 8:15 p.m., Colonial Heights police responded to White Bank Park after a suspect opened fire at a boat ramp, seriously injuring a man who was in a boat and later fired at a second person who was not hit—authorities say the suspect fled in a dark-colored SUV.  12 On Your Side
  • Jonathan Escobar Herrera was detained by ICE at the Chesterfield courthouse on June 23 and taken to a detention facility in Bowling Green—his wife, who paid his ticket and now cares for their two children while seeking work, said she was heartbroken when she expected him to come home.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Commonwealth University quickly removed its DEI office following state and federal orders—reshuffling staff without layoffs—while the University of Virginia ended its DEI program but saw its president resign amid warnings of federal funding cuts.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • VCU professor Robert Sims retired after more than 40 years of building the Spanish studies program and teaching students. He donated over 10,000 books to VCU Libraries and will travel in retirement (he plans to visit Argentina first).  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Shiori Meadows, a VCU School of Education alum and school counselor from Hawaii, traveled 4,700 miles to Richmond to attend a school-based play therapy workshop—designed to help educators use play to support student expression. She said the training was perfect for expanding her toolbox when working with children who need new ways to process their feelings.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • The first spotted lanternfly adults of the season were seen last week in Richmond and Lynchburg and they can harm trees and vines. The Virginia Department of Agriculture advises anyone who sees one to stomp it and report it—helping officials track the pest.  12 On Your Side
