  • Richmond Animal Care and Control is offering reduced adoption fees for the 4th of July weekend—reopening today from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and tomorrow from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. after rescuing dogs from recent hot temperatures.  12 On Your Side

  • Nico Rivera, the man suspected of killing a Chesterfield man in Scott’s Addition last year, was arrested again on Thursday.  12 On Your Side
  • Officers responded to a shooting call on the 2100 block of Keswick Avenue in Richmond — a man was seriously injured.  12 On Your Side
  • Campaign treasurer Katherine Margaret Buchanan pleaded guilty last week to embezzling over $840,000 from campaign funds used for a Peloton bike, flights to Italy and other personal expenses—she also underreported her income, leaving her with $671,200 in unpaid federal taxes and faces sentencing on Oct. 8.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Over 2,000 events will take place in Virginia in the next year as VA250 marks America's 250th birthday with visits to historic sites + a mobile museum scheduled to travel statewide. Cheryl Wilson, VA250’s executive director, said the celebration will help Virginians reconnect with the country’s roots + inspire future community engagement.  12 On Your Side

HEALTH NEWS

  • Poison specialists at the Virginia Poison Center warned that look-alike beverages, whose packaging makes alcoholic drinks appear like soft drinks, may endanger children over the Fourth of July weekend—Dr. John Downs explained that young kids can mistake them for regular fruit drinks—and parents are urged to store alcohol safely. No severe cases have led to hospitalizations so far, but the center continues to monitor incidents closely.  6 News

  • At the Henrico Sports & Events Center on July 2—nearly 2,000 community members gathered to honor 13-year-old basketball star Jaylen Martinez—who died from a self-inflicted accidental shooting on June 23 and united Richmond’s sports community with his kindness and sportsmanship.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • At Parlay Bar & Lounge in Scott's Addition, Paul 'McNasty' Tran became Richmond's hot dog eating champion — he ate nine quarter-pound hot dogs in 10 minutes during the contest on July 4th — and earned $500 along with the Golden Glizzy trophy. Thirteen competitors joined the event using only their hands under simple contest rules.  6 News
