ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Hull Street Road—one of the deadliest corridors south of Richmond with 11 fatalities in five years—is set for a major redesign that will add crosswalks, stoplights, and bike lanes, with work beginning this year, improvements starting in fall, and completion expected in 2028.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CRIME NEWS

  • A murder suspect in Scott’s Addition — 28-year-old Nico Rivera — had his bond revoked by a Richmond Circuit Court judge after he missed required drug test appointments while under house arrest and will remain in jail until his five-day jury trial begins on October 20.  FOX Richmond
  • Twenty-eight-year-old murder suspect Nico Rivera is being sent back to jail after he missed two mandatory drug tests while under house arrest for killing Jacob Baldwin — he faces a five-day jury trial starting on October 20.  12 On Your Side
  • An occupant in a Toyota Highlander was shot and taken to the hospital on Route 1 in Chesterfield County just after 11:55 a.m. on July 8—police said the vehicle crossed into northbound lanes and the road was closed overnight between Rio Vista Street and Shields Road with no public threat.  FOX Richmond

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomorrow, the National Park Service and local partners will launch a two-week celebration of Maggie L. Walker’s 161st birthday with guided tours at her historic site (July 11th, 12th, 18th, and 19th from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and scheduled community events including a cemetery clean-up and a walking tour through Jackson Ward on July 12th.  12 On Your Side

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Commonwealth University held the Gabriel Summer Institute where high school students learned to trace their family roots and explore Richmond's Black history by visiting historic sites like the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground, and Sankofa Community Orchard — the program also introduced them to college admissions professionals and campus life.  Virginia Commonwealth University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Richmond launched a project to reduce excess sewage into the James River by upgrading its 1800s sewer system with an underground storage facility at Canoe Run Park. The $100 million initiative will be supported by state grants, and the DPU will start site investigations and design work with groundbreaking scheduled for 2027 & completion expected by 2029.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Virginia State Police graduated over 100 new troopers from 15 states last week at its academy, reducing officer vacancies to 260 as improved recruitment efforts boosted interest in law enforcement. Officials said the new class is the largest since 2018 and will help the force work on intelligence and data projects to fight violent crime.  6 News
  • Chesterfield County added 18,565 residents between April 2020 and July 2023, making it the fastest growing area with a population now near 383,876. County officials plan to add more schools, town homes, and jobs to help support growth — a move that builds on the county's strong community ties.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
