  • Young entrepreneurs held the first Soul Stir Youth Business Fair at Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center on Saturday—raising funds to buy care packages for foster children and learning key business skills like pricing and marketing, according to organizer Dr. Shweta Thackeray.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Chesterfield County Police are investigating a drowning at Swift Creek Reservoir in Brandermill that occurred Saturday before 5 p.m.+ officers and the SCUBA Rescue Team located the body of an 18-year-old male two hours later while his identity remains withheld.  12 On Your Side
  • An 83-year-old man was shot in the leg on Hull Street in Richmond’s south side on Saturday evening—police have said he was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as detectives investigate the incident.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Architects in Richmond are working with the community to design a memorial for 22,000 free and enslaved people buried at a forgotten African burial ground beneath an interstate and billboard — a site that has been neglected for years. Feedback from a public presentation at Abner Clay Park will guide updates to three design models over the next year or two — the project aims to ensure this history is honored.  6 News
  • On July 12, community members saw three design proposals for a new memorial at Shockoe Burying Ground despite heavy rain. The designs focus on honoring the site’s history by either removing existing structures or repurposing them, such as converting the gas station + billboard into reflective spaces.  12 On Your Side

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Youngkin appointed Ron Jefferson—who spent 17 years lobbying for Appalachian Power—to the State Air Pollution Control Board, where he will fill one of two vacant seats for a four-year term. The move follows legislative reforms that shifted permit powers to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials warned that Hopewell's wastewater treatment plant spilled 1 million gallons of untreated sewage after a power failure at 11:50 p.m. on Friday, prompting a swimming advisory for parts of the James River and Gravely Run Creek. Residents and pets should avoid water activities in these areas—repairs are expected to be complete by Friday, July 18.  6 News
