  • On July 12, Wings of Rescue flew a plane carrying cats and dogs rescued from flooded Texas to Richmond—where the Richmond SPCA took in 18 cats and kittens to free up shelter space; around 20 other cats and dogs were sent to shelters in Norfolk and Fredericksburg—now resting and preparing for adoption.  12 On Your Side

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A proposed data center campus project moved forward in western Chesterfield as developers acquired over 1,200 acres at Upper Magnolia Green for about $60 million—transactions closed in late June. The new sites near Moseley and Westchester Commons will support plans to build data center campuses in the coming months.  6 News
  • Walmart led local grocery sales in 2024 by selling $813 million in groceries and earning 17% of the market while Kroger and Food Lion followed with $710 million and $686 million, respectively—Food World warned that stiff competition may force one chain to exit if conditions do not improve.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Heavy rainfall led to flash flooding across Central Virginia, and Chesterfield County Fire and EMS rescued people from rising creeks — officials warned that 6 inches of moving water can lift vehicles and urged drivers to avoid flooded roads.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Henrico Police will host a free car seat safety check on July 19 at Walmart on Nine Mile Road from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.—certified technicians will review proper installation and seat manuals to ensure the safety of children.  6 News
  • VCU Police Academy celebrated its 50th graduating class on July 11 at the College of Health Professions—seven new officers completed an intensive training program that began in 1979. The recruits will soon begin field training to serve the Richmond community.  Virginia Commonwealth University

HEALTH NEWS

  • More than 19,000 residents live in a pharmacy desert with neighborhoods like Manchester, Highland Park, Fulton Hill, and Dumbarton lacking nearby drugstores that also offer key health services—researchers and providers have planned pilot vaccine programs and Medicaid-funded clinical care to strengthen access before more closures occur. These efforts aim to ensure that vulnerable communities receive essential care and preventive services.  Richmond Magazine
