COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CBS 6 hosted an Anthem LemonAid stand outside historic studios on Broad Street on Friday—raising nearly $26,000 for local children fighting cancer. Viewers gave money and shared their voices via the Giving You A Voice Cam while local restaurants served lemon-inspired dishes to support the cause.  6 News
  • The city signed a paid trial lease with Allianz Amphitheater & Live Nation to control 60 free Belle Isle parking spaces, which will be closed on concert days for event safety. Residents on Oregon Hill and Belle Isle visitors said they faced fewer parking spots and more traffic near the venue.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CRIME NEWS

  • Brandon Michael Paige was convicted on three felony charges for attacking with a machete and a pistol in Richmond's East End — he will be sentenced in July and faces 28 years.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Richmond Jazz and Music Festival announced a downtown jazz series—Straight No Chaser—that will host free live performances and jam sessions at local venues from August 6 to August 8. The festival itself will run on August 9-10 at Maymont and feature both established and emerging artists.  12 On Your Side
  • Rick Atkinson, a Pulitzer Prize winner, visited the Virginia Museum of History and Culture in Richmond to discuss his new book The Fate of the Day about the American Revolution — he explained why the events remain important and detailed his plan with Ken Burns for a 12-hour documentary releasing in November.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Saturday evening storms knocked out power for more than 10,000 Dominion Energy customers, with about 8,540 in Central Virginia from areas including Henrico, Colonial Heights, Hanover + Chesterfield. Today is forecast to be muggy and hot with highs in the low to mid 90s and isolated storms possible.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The State Inspector General’s office will audit the Bon Air juvenile facility—requested by the Commission on Youth due to staffing concerns. Officials have not announced when the review will begin.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Virginia is increasing the time youth spend at Bon Air Correctional Center by raising minimum terms by up to one year and maximum terms by up to 18 months—new guidelines that took effect in March for new residents. Some advocates worry that longer stays amid current staffing shortages and program delays could harm rehabilitation efforts.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • VCU Health purchased a 3-acre site in October for $9.5 million—now the health system is demolishing an old dairy factory to make room for the Pauley Heart Center. The project will create a new facility for heart care.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • The Virginia Department of Health said more than 9,100 emergency room and urgent care visits have been reported for tick bites so far this year—a rate higher than in the past three years. Dr. Labgold urged residents to use DEET, wear protective clothing, and safely remove ticks with tweezers or a tick spoon while watching for symptoms.  12 On Your Side
