ECONOMY NEWS

  • UK-based pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca will build its largest drug manufacturing facility in Virginia as part of a $50 billion US investment that will create hundreds of new jobs, with the final site still under review.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education launched Project STEAM to spark early interest in science, technology, engineering, arts and math among Richmond preschoolers. The program hosted an exhibition at Maymont on June 9 and will hold a free interactive workshop at Richmond Main Library on July 26+ families can also access online modules in English and Spanish.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Richmond Public Schools started the RPS 200 extended year program Monday for 2,000 elementary students at Cardinal, Fairfield Court, Oak Grove—Bellemeade and Woodville. The program adds 20 days of instruction to boost reading skills and has raised scores by up to 30 points at some schools—an independent study on its impact will be available this fall.  VPM
  • Five recent VCU graduates have been chosen for the prestigious Fulbright awards for the 2025-26 school year. They will travel abroad—Taiwan, Bulgaria, Nigeria, Argentina, and Germany—to teach, research, or study, which shows a continuing trend of Fulbright honors at VCU.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • The City of Richmond appointed Letitia Shelton as its new Director of Finance after Sheila White resigned + the Richmond native brings over 30 years of public finance experience and will begin her role on Aug. 6 + she previously led finance operations in Virginia Beach.  12 On Your Side
  • Richmond International Airport plans nearly $30 million in projects that include a sculpture of a Virginia dogwood blossom that is 24 feet tall and a garden of native plants. The sculpture will be installed between the North and South daily parking garages at the base of a V—an area designed to promote a greener and safer facility.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia Medicaid officials said that without federal guidance on Medicaid changes, hospitals could lose billions as new work requirements would affect 600,000 residents under the expansion. Law makers and hospital administrators expressed concern over the complicated verification process—fearing that rural hospitals might face closures if funding drops further.  6 News
