ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A tractor-trailer carrying concrete crashed on westbound I-64 near Route 288 in Goochland on Tuesday morning, closing all lanes and causing delays + drivers were detoured at Exit 175.  12 On Your Side

  • Virago Alley will host Warriors in Bloom at Agecroft Hall and Gardens on the weekend of Aug.2—an immersive Renaissance faire that honors common people and powerful women like Joan of Arc. The event will feature live combat, crafting, and an artisan market with over 50 vendors.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Richmond City Council passed a resolution accusing the housing authority of breaking state law by transferring Gilpin Court without the city's approval—city leaders have postponed the vote on the transfer set for September and are questioning if RRHA CEO Steven Nesmith secured proper board approval.  12 On Your Side
  • Rep. McClellan met with officials at the Chesterfield County Courthouse on Monday to say that fear over ICE detentions is keeping people from appearing in court to get marriage licenses—and to report crimes or testify. She said she is sponsoring a bill that will require ICE to report every detention or deportation of a person legally in the US.  VPM
  • On July 28, Richmond City Council passed a resolution accusing the RRHA of breaking state law by transferring Gilpin Court without the City’s approval—council members noted that the proposed multi-phase rebuild, with costs over $400 million, awaits a vote scheduled for September.  FOX Richmond
  • City officials have approved new rules for the sale of tobacco, vape, and hemp products that ban sales within 1,000 feet of each other or near homes, schools, parks, libraries, or churches—local vape shops support the change to help limit youth access while councilwoman Katherine Jordan said further regulations for grandfathered stores will come later.  FOX Richmond
  • On July 29th, Governor Youngkin approved a $5.8 million payment to Richmond while apartment construction in Scott's Addition came to a stop. Richmond officials said Virginia's minimum wage will rise soon (effective date pending).  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Chesterfield County officials last week refused to pay Branscome Operating LLC extra funds for a road widening on Winterpock Road, and the contractor claims it is owed about $7 million for two projects. Branscome filed a lawsuit over a separate project on Iron Bridge Road — the dispute remains ongoing — as both sides prepare for further legal steps.  6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Three teenage lifeguards at Pocahontas State Park Pool reported heat-related illnesses on Friday when temperatures exceeded 100 degrees; one lifeguard collapsed and was taken to the hospital while others experienced symptoms like headaches and weakness. The facility briefly closed before reopening, and officials said safety measures such as 45-minute work rotations and shortened 15-minute breaks were in place—though concerns remain over the adequacy of the precautions.  6 News
