CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Richmond police reported that Adam Turck, a 35-year-old actor known locally, was fatally shot on Saturday at 10:17 a.m. on East Grace Street while walking his dog and trying to help during a domestic dispute—witnesses said a 19-year-old involved then shot himself and his family said his organs will be donated to help save lives. 6 News
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ VCU’s Summer Academic Enrichment Program helped undergraduates test their skills in health science studies with six weeks of academic work, clinical training, and community service. The program, now in its 13th year (with about 50 students each session), helped students like Kashaf Baig gain real-world experience before pursuing doctoral degrees. Virginia Commonwealth University
- ➤ Virginia public colleges will raise in-state tuition by about 2.1% for the 2025-2026 school year, adding roughly $200 per student with overall costs nearing $29,600. Virginia Commonwealth University will see a 4.5% increase (nearly $1,400 extra with room and board) and Virginia State University a 4.4% rise (with average tuition now near $23,000) as state lawmakers allocate $15 million for financial aid. - ➤ A new initiative from the Richmond Ed Fund called Give 804 launched a campaign to help every RPS student have books at home and read at grade level. The campaign kicked off Monday at Gelati Celesti and runs until September 30 to raise $50,000 and 10,000 books for classroom and home libraries — ensuring students meet third grade reading goals. 6 News
- ➤ Virginia’s public colleges and universities will raise tuition this upcoming school year with in-state rates increasing about 2.1% (roughly a $200 hike per student), while some schools like Virginia Commonwealth University will see increases near 4.5% that push costs with room and board to over $32,000.
