CRIME NEWS

  • Richmond actor Adam Turck was shot while trying to help during a confrontation in Shockoe Bottom—local police are investigating the incident.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 43rd annual Carytown Watermelon Festival will be held on Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., where visitors will enjoy fresh watermelon, live music from over 80 musicians, and shopping at more than 100 local vendor booths. The free event offers a kids’ area and marks 42 years of community gathering — with over 100,000 people attending each year.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Richmond's Fox Elementary School reopens today after three and a half years of repairs following a February 2022 fire+ Workers have applied new paint and fixed the fence, and the historic building will soon welcome local students and community members.  6 News
  • Several Central Virginia and Tri-Cities school districts are reporting open teaching positions days ahead of the school year—some districts, like Henrico with 161 vacancies and Richmond recruiting 89 teachers, are offering bonuses up to $7,500 to attract fully certified candidates while others remain nearly fully staffed. Districts including Petersburg and Chesterfield are also working hard to fill teaching roles before classes begin.  6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Plans have been announced to install 1,700 solar panels on CarMax Park’s roof and staff parking lot which, if approved, would generate one megawatt of electricity — enough to power 250 homes and become one of the largest installations at any pro baseball venue. The project, developed with Dominion Energy, will proceed after the 2026 season and is pending local and state approval.  12 On Your Side

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced it will begin transitioning to all-electronic tolling on the Powhite Parkway in winter 2025 (cash will no longer be accepted) and later on the Downtown Expressway and Boulevard Bridge. Drivers without E-ZPass will be billed by license plate (Downtown Expressway will still accept cash during the transition).  RVAHub
  • Henrico County finalized a purchase in July of a 6.1 acre parcel at 9301 Patterson Ave to create a new neighborhood park after plans for apartments, assisted living and a convenience store were dropped. Local residents gathered over 400 signatures to keep the land green—county officials will soon hold public meetings to decide the park’s features.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Center for Sport Leadership finished its 25th year by having a record five new graduates join VCU Athletics for sports jobs in marketing, development, baseball, and basketball. Annie Bartley and Campbell Ellis are among the new hires, and program director (Ed McLaughlin) said the move shows VCU's strong focus on local talent.  Virginia Commonwealth University
