- ➤ The $20 million T.B. Smith Community Center now open in South Richmond offers 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with a computer lab, kitchen, playground, sports courts, and a field for softball and football. The modern center—funded by an American Rescue Plan Act grant and outfitted with solar panels—is set to host special events, summer camps, and serve as an emergency response building for residents. 6 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Police arrested 46-year-old Latrice Coles for a felony hit-and-run after Alexis Parker was severely injured on Richmond Highway on July 6—surveillance video captured the incident. FOX Richmond
- ➤ The Spotsylvania NAACP will meet with community leaders this weekend to review a case where a Richmond couple was allegedly targeted with racial slurs and gun threats that led to a car crash and injuries—officials say the investigation may expand to include hate crime charges. 6 News

- ➤ Three Richmond artists will preview their new musical 'Gabriel' about the 1800 Virginia slave rebellion at Highland, President James Monroe's historic home, on Sunday, August 10 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The musical will run from Sept. 26 to Nov. 9 at Hanover Tavern and tells the story of an enslaved blacksmith who planned to capture Governor James Monroe to end slavery. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ More than three years after a late-night fire, William F. Fox Elementary School on Hanover Avenue reopened Wednesday evening with modern classrooms—upgraded safety systems, a new sprinkler system, and updated common areas for students and staff. The $30 million restoration also featured a book drive to support a local education campaign and may prompt similar upgrades at other Richmond Public Schools. Richmond Free Press

- ➤ More than five years after City Council voted to form a civilian review board for the Richmond Police Department, the board still lacks policies and members. Joseph Lowery, a former FBI agent appointed in February 2024, continues to work on drafting procedures—while officials coordinate with police and unions to move the process forward. - ➤ Richmond officials introduced upgrades at City Hall's first floor, including a staffed concierge desk, color-coded signs, and new security screening equipment — measures that improved public access and transparency. The city plans to add multilingual signage and other enhancements later this year. Richmond Free Press

- ➤ A Chesterfield woman is disputing a $1,474.50 bill from Bon Secours Mercy Health for a cancer screening her insurance had already paid, and she spent over nine hours on phone calls with both the hospital and Aetna. A hospital spokesperson said her account is on hold while they review paperwork and a pending insurance response. 6 News
