- ➤ City officials opened the Southside Community Center and are finishing four centers—Southside, Luck's Field, Thomas B. Smith and Calhoun—designed with local input to offer free programs and activities for all ages. - ➤ A Mechanicsville social worker who pled guilty to health care fraud settled civil claims by paying $449,014.93 for fraudulent Medicaid and Medicare reimbursements submitted between January 2017 and December 2022 — his overall payments exceed $1.2M when adding restitution, forfeiture, and a fine. - ➤ Dr. Frank Ramsey, an 83-year-old former ER doctor, was granted a $2,500 bond in Manchester General District Court after allegedly assaulting a patient at Chippenham Hospital on August 6—he will remain under strict house arrest and face additional restrictions until his next court date on September 11. 6 News

- ➤ Richmond Ballet will open its season next month with a new ballet called Piensa en Mi that is inspired by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. The debut will occur during Moving Art One at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts from Sept. 11 to Sept. 21 and will also feature Trey McIntyre's dance work for the first time in the company's history. - ➤ VCU will host RodneyCon as part of Weeks of Welcome from August 16 through September 7, where events like a silent headphone party, convocation, and campus tours will help freshmen, transfers, and returning students explore campus life and build community. - ➤ Faith Parker, a VCU senior from Richmond, spent her summer internship in Boston at Boston Medical Center and the Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine where she joined neurosurgery rounds, shadowed surgeries, and researched Alzheimer’s. Her experience, supported by VCU’s Internship Funding Program—boosting her hands-on skills, advances her goal of becoming a neurosurgeon. Virginia Commonwealth University

- ➤ An anonymous winner claimed Virginia's largest lottery jackpot when a ticket from an E&C Mid-Atlantic convenience store in Burgess won the $348 million Mega Millions drawing on June 27. The winner chose a $155.6 million cash option and said they plan to buy a riding lawn mower while lottery profits help fund K-12 education. 6 News

- ➤ Health officials from Richmond and Henrico advise college-bound students to get needed vaccinations such as COVID-19, hepatitis A, HPV and meningitis vaccines and maintain a healthy diet with regular exercise and hydration. Officials also recommend setting a sleep routine and turning off screens before bed—steps designed to help students avoid illness as they transition to campus life. 6 News
- ➤ The American Red Cross reports a drop in blood donations during the back-to-school season and is offering free A1C screening—used to check for diabetes—and $15 gift cards to encourage donors.
