COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Richmond SPCA is waiving all adoption fees for Clear The Shelters Week from August 18 to August 24 to help local families adopt rescued pets at 2519 Hermitage Road during regular hours. Sponsored by the Betty J. Parmer Trust (honoring the late Ms. Parmer’s love for animals and her dog Max), the event is part of a national campaign.  RVAHub

  • Elevation Sports Bar is preparing to open in the former Sam Miller’s space at 1212 E. Cary St. in Shockoe Slip — it will be led by Lorenzo Cheatham, a first-time restaurant owner, and Javontae Jones, who also runs Eden Restaurant & Bar.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • After a shooting near its location injured three people on August 17, Croaker’s Spot closed Monday for a mental health day so its staff could recover, while Richmond Police responded just before 7 p.m. on East 11th Street near Hull Street—authorities continue to investigate the incident.  FOX Richmond

EDUCATION NEWS

  • RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras said on Monday at Thomas H. Henderson Middle School that students will not be taken if ICE agents show up and that protocols require a legal mandate before any discussion—he also blamed state funding cuts and urged the state to step up support. His remarks came on a first day of school that mixed celebration with concerns over dwindling education resources.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Undergraduate Sunwoo Kim and School of Pharmacy professor Joseph McClay teamed up this summer at VCU to study the genetics of refractory migraine by analyzing patient data on a cloud platform—aiming to guide future choices in migraine treatment. Kim presented their findings at the HSRUP poster session and plans to pursue a PhD in pharmacology to build on her research skills.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • Richmond’s planning department approved 12 new short-term rental rules that require Airbnb hosts to rent only their primary residence and live there at least 185 days a year—this move aims to protect housing amid a growing affordability crisis.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • VCU Health is planning a new inpatient tower in downtown Richmond that will expand access to specialized care and research if approved in December. The $1.5B project will be built in two phases—starting with an eight-story building for 240 beds—and include demolition of existing facilities with construction set to begin in July 2027.  12 On Your Side

SPORTS NEWS

  • ImmerseCon and the RVA Esports Championship will return to Richmond on Aug. 30-31 at the Hilton Hotel & Spa Short Pump—players will compete in tournaments for Call of Duty, Mario Kart 8, Rocket League, Street Fighter 6, Super Smash Bros.
