COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Forward Foundation will hold Forward Fest on Oct. 4 at Final Gravity Brewing Co. in Richmond to raise funds for working single-parent families—riders will check in at 7:45 a.m. for a 30- or 50-mile ride starting at 8:30 a.m., while non-riders can join a festival with live music, games, raffles, and food from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond Folk Festival is returning this fall from Oct. 10 to Oct. 12 with free live music, dance, storytelling and craft displays — featuring more than 30 groups on six stages — that celebrate diverse American traditions.  12 On Your Side
  • A new exhibition called A South Forty: Contemporary Architecture and Design in the American South is on view at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.—featuring work by Richmond firms ArchitectureFirm and Fultz & Singh Architects and projects from over 40 practices across the American South curated by Peter MacKeith of the Fay Jones School.   • The Richmond Folk Festival returns October 10-12—announcing 10 new artists to join a diverse lineup at the riverfront. The free event will draw about 200,000 visitors and feature six stages showcasing music, dance, crafts, storytelling, and food from many cultures.  RVAHub

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU welcomed its Class of 2029 during a lively New Student Convocation at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on Monday. The new students then joined a Spirit Walk — marching down West Broad Street to a block party that boosted campus energy.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • University of Richmond’s Distant Viewing Lab received a $1 million grant from the Mellon Foundation to expand access to AI tools for analyzing art, film, and photography. The lab (co-founded by professors Taylor Arnold and Lauren Tilton) will offer workshops, develop educational resources, and host a conference over the next three years to support digital humanities research.  RVAHub
  • VCU is making crossing the street safer near campus by adding curb extensions and turn-hardening projects after a survey showed that 45% of people worry about pedestrian safety. Officials will use more traffic enforcement and social media campaigns—tools that help drivers and walkers stay alert.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • Henrico County is cracking down on vape shops that sell flavored products to minors without proper ID checks. Officials said shops must meet new standards from the Attorney General's office or face fines—local authorities will consider additional penalties if rules are not followed.  FOX Richmond
  • Abigail Spanberger accepted a debate scheduled for Oct. 9 at Norfolk State University and on WAVY-TV — Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears had already agreed, setting the stage for a gubernatorial face-off in Virginia.  12 On Your Side
