COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday evening, roughly 100 paddlers and a couple hundred onlookers enjoyed a lively Sun’s Down Surf’s Up Rodeo as they kayaked the whitewater rapids at Pipeline Trail on the James River. Organizers partnered to advocate for public access despite Pipeline Trail having been closed for over a month and officials remaining uncertain about when it will reopen—local sponsors and advocates continue to push for a safe, long-term solution.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A juvenile riding her bike died after being hit by a car while trying to cross Three Chopt Road near Ridge Elementary School in Henrico on Sunday morning—bystanders tried life-saving measures until EMS crews arrived.  6 News

  • Jackie Laubacher started her dog training business, 2 Thumbs Up RVA, in May as a tribute to her pet Yuki—an American Staffordshire Terrier who taught her to help dogs stay calm while she worked with Richmond SPCA.   Richmond Magazine

CRIME NEWS

  • A 40-year-old man was shot and killed Sunday around 11:45 a.m. when he tried to break into the Virginia Beach home of an off-duty State Police special agent—who was injured during the struggle and placed on administrative leave.  6 News
  • A woman was shot and killed Sunday night at around 9:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Hunt Avenue on Northside, Richmond—police reported that she was deceased when they arrived and are investigating the incident.  6 News
  • A Lyft driver was shot in the shoulder early Sunday morning near Gillies Creek Park in Richmond's East End — he is now recovering as police question a detained suspect.  6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On August 24, councilor Sarah Abubaker led a walk-and-talk in Traylor Estates to gather neighbors’ concerns about poor storm drainage and speeding near schools—she said small issues will be added to the city’s 311 pipeline while larger ones will be raised in the next budget cycle. Abubaker will hold another community walk in the Staffordshire Region and invites 4th District residents to share their needs.  12 On Your Side

  • The Richmond Flying Squirrels will host Harry Potter Night on Friday, Aug. 29 at The Diamond — where the team will give away Hogwarts-themed scarves to the first 1,000 fans and auction game-worn jerseys to support Greater Richmond Fit4Kids.  6 News
  • Richmond's floorball club hosted a two-day tournament this past weekend that drew players from along the east coast with guidance from national-level coaches. The club, founded last year, charges about $5 per session and will move its fall events to Barton Memorial Rink in Hanover.  12 On Your Side
