CRIME NEWS

  • Investigators discovered a mummified man under bricks in South Richmond in 2002 and he remains unidentified after 23 years—officials now use a 3D model of his face to ask the public for any details, noting he was estimated to be between 50 and 70 years old and a pair of blue slip-on shoes was found nearby.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond's Friday Cheers concert series will be paused in 2026 as Brown's Island undergoes a $30M renovation planned to add bathrooms, paths and environmental upgrades; construction begins this fall with funding split equally between the city and community donations - the series is set to return in 2027 once improvements are finished.  6 News
  • Jess Gary opened Still Life Ceramics at 1600 Altamont Ave. in Scott’s Addition last June and now offers beginner and intermediate pottery classes, studio rentals, and memberships with 24/7 access—a move that makes the Richmond studio the fourth Still Life Ceramics outpost, joining two in Los Angeles and one in Detroit.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • First-year medical students at VCU School of Medicine will begin simulation training in two days to practice clinical and communication skills before facing real patients. The Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety offers a safe, realistic space—where students try on their professional roles—helping prepare them for future challenges.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Records show that since 2001, Richmond Public Schools missed four federally required asbestos inspections at Elizabeth D. Redd Elementary School—completing only five of the nine needed tests and causing teachers to worry about health risks. The district has resumed regular testing and begun remediation for issues like roof leaks and crumbling tiles, though staff remain concerned about lingering asbestos hazards.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Undoing Ruin's Jessy Woodke worked on a local yard last June by digging a drainage ditch and planting native species that slowed runoff and filtered stormwater before it reached nearby areas. He started his conservation landscaping business after studying at Reynolds Community College and now employs local experts & promotes sustainable practices in Richmond.  VPM

  • The Red Cross will hold blood drives from August 29 to September 21 where donors get a mystery bag with one of four special T-shirt designs from its partnership with PEANUTS to honor the comic strip’s 75th anniversary—donations help meet high demand during back-to-school season.  6 News
