CRIME NEWS

  • A Richmond family is in deep sorrow as 34-year-old Johnnita Russell was fatally shot Sunday night on Hunt Avenue, leaving her newborn Sapphire in the NICU while police arrested 57-year-old Michael Sprague in a domestic-related case—April Russell is filing for emergency custody and nonprofit Women of Endurance will collect baby items at Crystal Lake Park in Hopewell tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  FOX Richmond

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is presenting an exhibition called Giants — featuring the collection of Kasseem Dean, known as Swizz Beatz, and Alicia Keys that displays nearly 40 works by contemporary Black artists and preserves Black culture. Tickets go on sale Sept. 8 and the exhibit runs from Nov. 22 to March 1.  Richmond Free Press
  • The RVA East End Festival will take place at Chimborazo Park on Sept. 27 from noon to 7 p.m.—young musicians from Richmond Public Schools will perform with Grammy-nominated artists to support local arts programs. If it rains, the event will move to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School and offer free shuttle service, food vendors, and family activities.  Richmond Free Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Justice Cleo E. Powell was elected as the next chief justice of Virginia Supreme Court — the first Black woman in the role — and will take office Jan. 1, 2026 after Chief Justice S. Bernard Goodwyn retires.  Richmond Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Henrico County officials reported on Thursday that the Henrico Cares mental health program cut youth suicide risk by 11% and reduced substance use, threat assessments, and behavioral issues—program leaders expect the multi-million dollar initiative to be fully paid off by its fifth year.  6 News
