  • Richmond residents enjoyed fall events last weekend with Labor Day potluck take-alongs, a reading of 'The Weight of Forgiveness,' fall planting at The Great Big Greenhouse and a Natural Festival run and will look forward to a Princess Diana tribute—set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Dominion Energy Center’s Mooney Hall—and First Fridays fun on Sept. 5.  12 On Your Side
  • Sheba Williams started Nolef Turns in Church Hill to help people leaving long-term incarceration with services like housing, job support, and legal guidance—she works with her two daughters to run the nonprofit while it will host a Virginia Justice Conference on Sept. 11–12 and Sept. 20 to promote criminal justice changes.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, Aug. 31, Richmond cyclist Bryan Pecora was struck while crossing the intersection of Leigh Street and Belvedere—he suffered a sore wrist and bruises when the driver did not stop, and he later filed a police report.  12 On Your Side
  • Two people were injured in a drive-by shooting near 5200 Old Midlothian Turnpike on Sunday just after 6 p.m., and Richmond Police responded to secure the scene.  12 On Your Side
  • Cynthia Johnson, a nurse and mother, was shot to death at a south Richmond motel on Aug. 11 and her boyfriend was arrested on first-degree murder charges—her mother said prior dropped charges might have kept her daughter alive.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond’s fall arts season brings many events—plays, concerts, and art exhibits—set to take place at venues like the Allianz Amphitheater, Foyer Gallery, and St. Christopher’s School starting in early September. The schedule features national acts and local artists along with exhibits celebrating important cultural milestones such as the nation’s 250th birthday.  Richmond Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Repair work has started on the Texas Beach Bridge after it closed three years ago due to severe damage—repair crews will fix its decking, steel beams, footings and south tower to restore safe passage, and hikers must use an alternate route until repairs finish in December.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Henrico County leaders plan to rezone Lakeside Avenue, located between Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and Bryan Park, to create a walkable Garden District with narrower streets, tree-lined sidewalks, and added bike lanes — a draft plan for public comment will be released by mid-October.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
