ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A woman was hit by a vehicle near Patterson Avenue and Gaskins Road in Henrico County before midnight on Wednesday and sustained life-threatening injuries — Henrico Police said the investigation is ongoing —.  6 News
  • Henrico police said a loaded tractor-trailer collided with a flatbed truck on September 4 at the intersection of Williamsburg Road—South Laburnum Avenue, jackknifing and flipping over to fatally pin a sign spinner on the sidewalk while causing additional crashes.  FOX Richmond
  • Late Wednesday, a 25-year-old Oklahoma woman named Alexandria Current was struck and killed by a Nissan Altima while crossing the westbound lanes of Patterson Avenue near Westhampton Glen Drive — police said the driver remained on scene and dark clothing with low lighting may have contributed to the crash.  12 On Your Side

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded just after 7 p.m. on Sept. 4 to a shooting in Richmond’s Manchester District where they found a man in his 40s who was taken to VCU Medical Center and later died—authorities have not yet identified any suspect.  12 On Your Side

CULTURE NEWS

  • Three VCU cinema alumni who met as students continue working together and are making the film Yasmine/Jasmine, which follows a young woman in Richmond who travels to Morocco after her father's death. The film's script was featured on the Muslim List—highlighting the project's growing cultural impact.  Virginia Commonwealth University

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Virginia Department of Education is reviewing its academic benchmarks—leaders say more transparency is needed to ensure that revised cut scores do not unfairly impact students and educators. Board President Grace Creasey expects the board to approve the changes by October, while education leaders urge that detailed modeling and impact analysis be shared.  Virginia Mercury
  • VCU political science students Ella Milton-Benoit and Rebecca Weil honed their leadership skills at a five-day summer retreat run by Virginia21 in July and are now using the experience to foster civic engagement on campus. They hold key leadership roles and plan to spark more collaboration among political science clubs—strengthening local advocacy.  Virginia Commonwealth University

  • Richmond announced that it has hired Ruth Morrison as the new director of intergovernmental affairs and she will begin her role on September 29—city officials said she brings over 12 years of policy and advocacy experience. Morrison will work with regional, state and federal leaders to move key city priorities forward.  Richmond Free Press
