ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Phillip Andrew McBride—a longtime Little Caesars employee who helped spin the company sign—was killed when a tractor-trailer overturned on him Friday night near the Laburnum Avenue restaurant; family, friends, and coworkers gathered in a memorial as the company announced it would reopen today.  12 On Your Side

CRIME NEWS

  • Richmond business manager Shannel Peoples-Hilliard pleaded guilty to wire fraud after using a school-issued credit card for $239,000 on trips to Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach and Miami—she now faces supervision and travel restrictions until her sentencing in January.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • A 44-year-old man was shot and has been identified as the victim in Richmond while detectives ask anyone with information to call Detective G. Russell (804) 646-7715.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Richmond International Film Festival will run from September 23 to September 28 and will feature 175 film premieres from 25 countries—along with nightly music performances, panels, and Q&As. The event will open with the world premiere of 'Omaha' at 7 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre and will include red carpet awards and mixers.  6 News
  • Forest Hill will host the 43rd Street Festival of the Arts on Sept. 13, where 75 local and regional artists will display their work and live music by the Tin Can Fish Band, The Grateful Dads, and Haze and Dacey will play — free admission is offered and a portion of sales will benefit CARITAS.  Richmond Magazine

  • Fox Elementary reopened yesterday in the Fan District after a $31 million restoration following a 2022 fire—hundreds of families attended the reopening as the school reestablished its role as a vital neighborhood hub.  Richmond Magazine
  • On Friday, Open High School students walked out at noon to demand gun reform as part of a nationwide movement by Students Demand Action—protesting school safety measures like metal detectors and clear backpacks that remind them of the threat of gun violence.  12 On Your Side
  • Today at Richmond Raceway, the B.R.A.K.E.S. program trains 200 families on teen driving safety—teaching crash prevention techniques as former race champion Doug Herbert honors his memory following the loss of his two sons in a car crash.   • The VCU Board of Visitors will hold in-person committee meetings on Sept. 11 starting at 8 a.m. at VCU Medical Center Critical Care Hospital, 1213 E.
