COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maymont nature center now officially has two porcupettes—Sandy and Barb—after a community vote that gave Barb nearly 4,000 votes out of 10,504 cast. Visitors can see the animals at the Robins Nature Center.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Richmond police charged 23-year-old Jayarie Baskerville-Griffin with first-degree murder and use of a firearm for the July killing of 64-year-old Teresa Jackson when officers found her unresponsive from a gunshot wound at the 1600 block of Rosecrest Avenue around 7:40 a.m.—she was pronounced dead at the scene.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU is starting the new academic year with new dining options like Choolaah Indian BBQ and Snack Nook, fresh certificate programs, and a dual-admission track with Reynolds Community College. Campus updates include a new branded shuttle, updated signage, and several new deans — all while interim provost Beverly Warren guides the university’s transition.  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond officials celebrated Tuesday a milestone in transforming Mayo Island from concrete into green space—its 14-acre site is now under a conservation easement in the James River Park System, ensuring it will remain a park—and demolition will begin soon as leaders work to open the park by next October.  6 News
  • The Henrico Board of Supervisors extended the deadline and scrapped the planned White Oak Special Focus Area so every new data center now must get board approval, a move aimed at curbing growth amid energy and environmental concerns in Varina—where nearly 40 centers operate.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
