COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At Mechanicsville High School, Navy JROTC students planted 2,977 American flags today to honor each victim of the 9/11 attacks, 24 years after the tragedy. The cadets’ careful act—each flag representing a life lost—underscored a strong sense of unity as they remembered the victims.  6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gild and Ash — a West End retailer of women’s accessories and gifts — is moving from its Patterson Avenue location after nine years and will open a larger 3,500-square-foot store at 5021 Huguenot Road in River Road II Shopping Center this month. The move comes as their old building is set to be redeveloped into a four-story multiuse facility and the co-owners plan to expand their offerings with new furniture, jewelry, candles and loungewear while improving product displays.  Richmond Magazine

CRIME NEWS

  • A study from Virginia Commonwealth University published in August showed that Richmond neighborhoods that were once redlined now see more youth violence—86% of violent incidents occurred in these areas. Researchers found that old racist policies left these communities with fewer resources and higher stress levels.  Virginia Commonwealth University

CULTURE NEWS

  • New seats were installed at Byrd Theatre on September 10 in Richmond, offering wider seating and more legroom while reducing capacity to about 920 patrons. The project cost over $650,000—restoring historic aisle details to their 1928 look.  FOX Richmond
  • Maymont will host Garden Glow this fall with three new light installations by Culture Creative. The event runs nightly, except Mondays, from October 15 to November 9 — visitors can enter until 9 p.m. before the show ends at 10 p.m.  6 News
  • Deau Eyes will begin the Tour de Richmond on September 14 with 14 shows over 14 days at local venues. Fans will see unique themed nights — including a classic show at The Camel — as each performance offers a different musical style and setup.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Recent VCU graduates will screen short documentaries from their media production class at the Richmond International Film Festival on Sept. 24 at Byrd Theatre — the event will also feature a Q&A with the filmmakers to mark their graduation work.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Interim Provost Beverly J. Warren announced winners of VCU’s National/International Recognition Awards and Excellence in Pedagogical Innovation Awards, naming 30 and 25 faculty respectively. The honorees will be celebrated at the Faculty Recognition Gala on Oct. 21 — highlighting VCU’s commitment to academic excellence.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Virginia State University in Petersburg reported record enrollment growth and launched new graduate programs to support first-generation students and Black business leaders. The university is planning capital projects including a 110,000-square-foot dorm (adding 454 beds) and renovations to update aging facilities and improve student housing.  Richmond Magazine
  • Chesterfield County Public Schools voted Tuesday to rezone a portion of Falling Creek Elementary’s district to Bensley Elementary as Falling Creek faced 130% capacity due to residential growth. Officials explained the change—covering areas east of US Route 1 and around South Pointe Landing—will balance enrollment before Bensley’s new facility opens next school year.  VPM

  • The Virginia Executive Mansion is reopening for visits on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays so locals can view new artwork that tells Virginia’s role in American history. The exhibit displays pieces ranging from historic portraits to a time capsule containing Mount Vernon dirt — all meant to show the state’s rich past.  12 On Your Side
  • Chesterfield County Public Schools announced a new school bus safety program that starts with a 30-day warning period, during which drivers who illegally pass buses will receive warning letters without fines—tickets will be issued beginning Oct. 15 and a $250 fine will apply if a driver fails to stop for buses with flashing red lights. The measure involves BusPatrol and the Chesterfield County Police Department to enhance student safety.  6 News
  • Richmond city officials announced a plan to remove the buildings and parking lots on Mayo Island — they will replace these with plants, walkways and picnic tables to create a permanent park.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia seniors and high-risk adults can get COVID-19 vaccines without a prescription today under a new standing order from Health Commissioner Dr. Karen Shelton—this change clears up recent confusion after reports showed that some citizens already received their booster shots through a Walgreens protocol that does not require a prescription.  6 News
  • Dr. Nicholas Thomson from VCU’s School of Medicine received a $3M grant from NIH to lead the nation’s largest study on using his Elevate VR program to reduce violence among high-risk youth. The trial will follow 360 victims of violence ages 10-17 after hospital discharge—measuring if the program can lower violence rates and related costs.  Virginia Commonwealth University
