COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Richmond Folk Festival announced its full schedule for its event set for September 13—highlighting arts, music and cultural performances planned throughout the day.  12 On Your Side
  • Volunteers gathered at Richmond National Cemetery on Sept 11 to clean headstones and pick up trash in honor of the brave men and women who died on that day — Carry the Load, a group started by two Navy SEALs, organized the event to help keep their memory alive.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 43rd Street Festival of the Arts will be held Saturday, September 13 from 10 am to 4 pm on W. 43rd Street & Forest Hill Avenue and will host 75 juried local and regional artisans. Music will be featured by Tin Can Fish Band at 11:00, The Grateful Dads at 1:00, and Haze & Dacey at 3:00 as a fundraiser for CARITAS.  RVAHub
  • Grammy-nominated pop singer Cody Fry will perform with the Richmond Symphony for its season opener on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Altria Theater—he will feature his orchestral pop compositions under the direction of Music Director Valentina Peleggi.  Richmond Free Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A 64-year-old substitute teacher in Henrico will bike 1,400 miles from Virginia to New Orleans starting Monday to inspire his students, riding through eight states and 20 cities over two weeks. He will carry the Nuckols Farm Elementary mascot—a little fox attached to his bike—and plan stops at every Five Guys to show that challenges can lead to big dreams.  6 News
  • Virginia State University went on lockdown Thursday due to a threat; today, campus entry is limited to faculty, staff and students with valid IDs—no injuries were reported.  FOX Richmond

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richmond voters will begin early voting on Sept. 19 for elections for governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general — and members of the House of Delegates at the Office of Elections, City Hall, and Hickory Hill Community Center. Voters must register by Oct. 24 and may request absentee ballots to cast their vote without long lines.  Richmond Free Press
  • VCU Police formed a Student Voice Committee of 10 students to advise on campus safety and build trust between students and law enforcement—applications remain open as full committee meetings will begin later this month. This committee is part of a course initiative that aims to foster open dialogue and transparency at VCU.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Richmond’s Department of Public Works is installing raised crosswalks at five major intersections on Midlothian Turnpike to slow vehicles and improve pedestrian safety—officials said the change could lower collision rates.  12 On Your Side
  • At the Virginia War Memorial’s Shrine of Memory, dozens honored nearly 3,000 lives lost in the September 11 terror attacks during a Patriot Day Ceremony held Thursday — the event featured a memorial bell tolling three times, personal reflections including remarks by Rear Admiral Samuel Cox, and visits to an exhibit displaying part of the Pentagon wall.  FOX Richmond
  • The City of Richmond approved a $5.8M restitution payment to Marvin Grimm Jr.—a man who spent decades in prison after his wrongful conviction in 1976 following DNA exoneration—and the City Council voted 8–1 on Monday as required by state law. The council also planned to add $2M to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, delayed the sale of a city-owned property, and approved policies for the Civilian Review Board amid ongoing debates.  Richmond Free Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • An analysis by pharmacists showed Virginia returned only 20% of drug spending to Medicaid through rebates—far less than the national average of about 68%. DMAS said it is fixing a data error and will resubmit the correct figures as lawmakers work to improve drug cost transparency.  Virginia Mercury
  • A survey by CareScout shows that private nursing home rooms in metro-Richmond cost $143,000 yearly—$25,000 above the state average, placing extra pressure on families caring for both children and elderly relatives. The data signals rising long-term care challenges in the area as more Baby Boomers seek help.  6 News
  • Virginia legislators questioned if the almost $2 billion in Medicaid funds for over 300 nursing homes improved care as staffing shortages and rising complaints pointed to oversight gaps. The Department of Medicaid Assistance Services and the Department of Health explained the funding issues at a subcommittee meeting and a new advisory board on nursing home oversight will meet next week — a lawsuit is pending over a veto of extra funding.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • VCU Health surgeon Jonathan Isaacs developed NerveTape, a wrap that repairs severed nerves without stitches. The device has been used in over 2,500 surgeries worldwide — it could soon change the way nerves are repaired.  Virginia Commonwealth University
