  • The James River Association has launched its second annual EcoFest at the James A. Buzzard Education Center on the bank of Great Shiplock Park to celebrate and protect the local environment—parking and shuttle service are available at Stone Brewing Taproom at 3401 Williamsburg Ave.  RVAHub
  • The Luck's Field Community Center opened on U Street in Richmond's East End and cost $20 million. The 30,000-square-foot facility — designed for recreation and emergency response — offers basketball courts, study rooms, and a teaching kitchen for residents.  6 News
  • The Fall RVA Home Show is scheduled for this weekend—Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14—and brings local residents home displays and vendor exhibits to explore home improvement ideas. The event is geared toward homeowners seeking new renovation projects.  12 On Your Side

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stanley Richmond, 95, donated his missing brother's World War II letters and bomber jacket to the Goochland Historical Society to honor the memory of Sgt. Robert Richmond— a 19-year-old tail gunner who was shot down in 1945 and remains missing. The Society has digitized 75 letters to preserve his legacy for future generations.  6 News
  • Hunter Taylor Stagg was a key figure in Richmond’s 1920s cultural scene as a co-founder of The Reviewer—he connected with notable writers and hosted progressive gatherings, including one where Langston Hughes enjoyed his cocktail Hard Daddy that eased racial tensions. Later he moved to Washington, D.C. for work and treatment, and he died in December 1960; his unmarked grave at Hollywood Cemetery was finally marked in 2007.  Richmond Magazine

EDUCATION NEWS

  • VCU professor Alex Wagaman leads a project called RISE to study homeless students without a parent or guardian so that policies and services in Virginia can be improved - the study uses a $75,000 grant from the Spencer Foundation and help from youth with lived experience to shape better school support.  Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Medical student Tucker Smith left VCU in 2024 to join Cirque du Soleil's trapeze act in Las Vegas, where he builds teamwork and resilience through high-pressure performances (he will return next year to finish his fourth year and apply the lessons learned to his future as a doctor).  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Appropriations Committee staff warned that Virginia will face up to $1.75 billion in new costs for K-12 schools and Medicaid because of federal spending cuts—and lawmakers must adjust tax and spending plans when the new two-year budget begins in January.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Today at 2 p.m. at the Capitol grounds, a state memorial will honor 19 fallen heroes including Henrico firefighter Lt. Buddy Barnes, who served for over 30 years and died in 2022 of esophageal cancer — his work launching the county’s HAZMAT program earned him a rare honor — spurring efforts for better firefighter cancer benefits.  6 News
  • Henrico has taken ownership of the former GreenCity site — a failed eco-district project — and will bring forward a new developer as 'Best Products Reimagined' is set to go before the board in late 2025.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • VCU researcher Dr. Nicholas Thomson received a $3M NIH grant to run a VR program that teaches high-risk youth conflict resolution, gun safety, and cyberbullying prevention by using immersive video game scenarios - the study will enroll 360 young people and follow them for six months to check if it lowers their risks from violence.  FOX Richmond

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alvin 'Mr. Pickle' Williams has followed Richmond baseball for 60 years—attending almost 60 of the 70 home games each season from Parker Field to The Diamond. The 76-year-old fan already holds his ticket for the first game at the new CarMax Park next season.  6 News
  • The Richmond Flying Squirrels played Friday at Diamond with a record-breaking fireworks display and will host one more game today and a final one on Sunday before moving to CarMax Park—tickets for the remaining games are nearly sold out. The farewell weekend marks the end of a long era at the historic stadium.  6 News
