COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Carrie Edwards—a Midlothian lottery winner—donated $50,000 to each of three charities focused on healing, service and community. Her total gift of $150,000 will support local programs.  12 On Your Side
  • The Salvation Army announced that applications for its Angel Tree and Silver Bells programs will open from Sept. 23rd to Sept. 25th—families can receive holiday support through these programs.  12 On Your Side

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Virginia State Police credited good Samaritans—such as a Marine vet using his water truck—for saving Quavelle Teon Montgomery from a burning 2015 Nissan Altima after it hit a tree on Interstate 295 near Woodman Road in Henrico County at about 5:30 p.m.; Montgomery was taken to VCU Medical Center and his condition remains unknown.  6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A puppy named Sapphire died after being abandoned in a dumpster on Westover Hills Boulevard on September 16 — RACC is collecting evidence and a DNA sample to find the person responsible.  FOX Richmond

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mary Munford principal Greg Muzik returned to work six months after he was hit by a car while riding his bike to a PTA meeting along Patterson Avenue—he now uses a walker at school and works on strength exercises to improve mobility. He will practice on his new electric bike to prepare for the National Walk, Bike and Roll to School Day on October 8.  FOX Richmond
  • Hanover County Public Schools students, teachers and staff wore green on Monday to honor Jaylen Martinez on what would have been his 14th birthday. He was a rising AAU basketball star who led Liberty Middle to a championship and planned to attend Benedictine this fall — the tribute honored his life and impact.  6 News
  • VCU political science professor Nelson Wikstrom died at 85 and was well known for his teaching and research that began in 1968 and his role as department chair. He wrote a textbook on intergovernmental relations that influenced local governments and many students—his work left a lasting legacy— and his kindness was remembered by all.  Virginia Commonwealth University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, RRHA and city leaders renamed Creighton Court to Creighton Renaissance and gave keys to residents for 68 renovated apartments equipped with modern appliances—residents reported feeling safer after years of displacement. The redevelopment will continue with 72 more affordable units planned for Gilpin Court—officials will discuss future steps in a board meeting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.  12 On Your Side
  • Chesterfield County has launched a bus camera program that will fine drivers $250 for passing stopped school buses after a grace period ending on October 15 — drivers may contest fines in court if needed — with fines enforced starting October 16.  6 News
  • Virginia may lose over $2.3 billion in revenue over three years because a tax cut signed on July 4 gives big breaks to businesses — the state expects a $573 million hit this year and more losses if lawmakers change state tax rules. Lawmakers worry that these cuts could strain funds for Medicaid and public schools as the General Assembly and Gov. Youngkin plan budget fixes.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Play It Forward Tennis Tournament will be held October 4—5 in Richmond to raise money for VCU Massey Cancer Center and add a new Field Day for non-tennis players to help form a heart health support group. Founder Tara Daudani, a breast cancer survivor, started the event to mix her love for tennis with her fight against cancer.  6 News
