COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The John Rolfe Family YMCA at 2244 John Rolfe Parkway in western Henrico—inside a Publix—will close Oct. 31 after two decades, the YMCA of Greater Richmond said.  6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Richmond will host several events this September, including the 5th Annual Intersecting History: Museum Crawl running throughout the month and Open University Fall 2025 starting Sept 22 at the Shepherd’s Center with 16 speakers. The schedule also features Maymont Bier-Garden this weekend, the World Record Goat Yoga Benefit, and the Chesterfield Sports Hall of Fame Banquet at the Perkinson Center—each offering a unique local experience.  12 On Your Side

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 22, the City of Richmond Public Utilities will start repairs to fix cavitation damage and improve stormwater drainage on the 3400 block of West Cary Street—traffic will be rerouted with lane closures and sidewalk detours stretching to South Nansemond Street until the work is expected to finish on October 6.  RVAHub
  • Henrico officials have scheduled three town halls for parents to respond to redistricting proposals that may affect 16 schools— the first meeting is tonight from 7–9 p.m. at J.R. Tucker High School.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • A new Virginia voter guide explains that early in-person voting begins tomorrow, September 20, and Election Day is on November 5 with registration and mail ballot deadlines coming before then. The guide reviews key contests—including a presidential race, a Richmond Senate contest featuring Sen. Tim Kaine against Hung Cao, and a crowded mayoral race—to help voters know their options.  6 News
  • The City of Richmond will install red-light cameras at 10 pilot intersections—selected using crash and violation data—to reduce dangerous red-light running. Construction will begin at the end of September, weather permitting, and after a 30-day grace period, registered owners will be fined $50 per offense.  RVAHub
  • Early voting begins today in Virginia, opening a 45-day period for residents to cast ballots before Election Day. Richmond voters can visit local registrars or nearby satellite locations and use curbside voting if needed — voting equipment has been tested and certified.  12 On Your Side
  • Governor Youngkin signed HB 1998 into law on September 15, making sextortion a Class 5 felony for anyone who uses threats of eviction, loss of money or property damage to force a sexual act. The law raises penalties for crimes against minors with prison terms up to 20 years and fines up to $100,000 — it aims to protect tenants and vulnerable people.  12 On Your Side
  • Commissioner Barrett Hardiman called for the removal of RRHA CEO Steven Nesmith on Thursday after he misquoted Mayor Avula's support for redeveloping Gilpin Court — board chair W.R. Bill Johnson said most commissioners back Nesmith while Councilwoman Stephanie Lynch backed Hardiman, noting a misalignment in goals for resident care. This dispute follows recent disagreements over the authority’s redevelopment plans that left questions about protecting vulnerable residents.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

  • Malik Lawson, a 20-year-old living with sickle cell disease in Richmond, has helped spur Virginia to pass a bill that boosts research funding for a fight against a disease that affects 100,000 people. His mother and state Delegate Delores McQuinn will join supporters at the Florence Neal Cooper Smith Sickle Cell 5K Walk Saturday at Dorey Park—registration remains open.  6 News
