COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Leaders and congregants of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church broke ground Sunday on 56 affordable housing units built in Greenway Village behind the church. The project is a partnership with Commonwealth Catholic Charities and other local groups and will serve families earning 40-60% of area median income, with the first phase completing by summer.  12 On Your Side
  • Ronald Tatum hosted his final Richmond Rodders car show at Osborne Landing today—displaying over 300 hot rods as he stepped down after 20 years because of his health issues. Michael Tillet is considering taking over to continue supporting local charities.  6 News

  • Eli Lilly will invest $5 billion to open a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at West Creek Business Park in Goochland County. The global pharmaceutical leader plans to expand production capacity in the area.  Richmond Times-Dispatch

CULTURE NEWS

  • Maymont's Oktoberfest celebration on Sunday offered families a full day of festivities after rain delayed Saturday's events; guests enjoyed German food, craft beer, live entertainment, contests and a dachshund parade. Vendors provided cultural activities—mixing traditional flavors and fun—while the event reinforced community spirit.  6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local students are growing and eating fresh vegetables as they learn to plant garden beds with Fit4Kids— a nonprofit that promotes healthy eating in Richmond schools; the program has built 50 gardens at sites like Henrico County’s Seven Pines Elementary and plans to expand to 55 schools by summer. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council is meeting today at 6 p.m. in City Hall to vote on next year’s real estate tax rate and consider proposals on budget transparency and land use—Henrico County will hold two meetings Tuesday to review a major water transmission project and other utility upgrades.  VPM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Virginia representatives are debating whether to extend enhanced federal health insurance subsidies as premium notices warning of monthly increases up to $834 in Roanoke and $739 in Henrico will begin arriving next month—lawmakers have offered different proposals and Senate negotiations will decide future coverage—while critics warn that up to 30% of Virginians on the state exchange may drop their policies if no further action is taken.  Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • On September 19, health care and education leaders met in Richmond to address Virginia’s shortage of nurses and health care managers by urging new training paths—such as lab schools and short-term credential programs—to better prepare a resilient workforce. Over 100 local stakeholders attended the summit, and officials emphasized that flexible career pathways will help bridge the gap between traditional college routes and emerging job demands.  Virginia Mercury

  • On Sept. 20, the University of Richmond football team beat VMI 38-14 in its first home game—rain delayed play for 3 hours and running backs Andrew King and Jamaal Brown led strong gains.
